The album was written in the wake of a near death experience, and uses this event as a catalyst, imbuing the songs with a sense of loss and urgency. A Dagger In Every Tide is at times almost uncomfortably autobiographical. The avalanche of guitars that arrive with "Over" adorn a story of addiction, and of a life squandered. Album centrepiece, "Red & Blue", with its twisting melodies and time signatures, paints a picture of insurmountable grief and pain, when confronted with someone you love being suddenly and violently taken from you. The song climaxes in a cacophony of catharsis, with wildly distorted sounds attempting to climb their way out of the speakers. The gurgling, warmly nostalgic "Wayfarer" reaches back into the depths of the darkest days of the last few years, where the overwhelming feeling of loneliness, and that you were coming apart at the edges, was ever present.
