Acapella

A remix, of sorts, of "At the Edge of the World," one of the songs from my EP "Everything is Shimmering Under the Surface." Networked generative processes simultaneously play small fragments of the song, offset by a certain interval, slowly progressing until every moment of music has been played many times. The original piece is heard from multiple viewpoints and individual moments are frozen in isolation, held in place to be experienced more fully than they would be in their original context. I made this with Cubism in mind. A kind of refraction.

This is a 30-minute excerpt from a recording of a complex, non-repeating sound generation process. The process for creating Solipse evolved from my installation at the 2013 Soundwalk in Long Beach, CA. Joe Newlin is a Los Angeles-based musician focused on the possibilities of the digitally extended guitar in song form. He is an advocate of open source software and uses the Pure Data programming environment to create custom audio software to cut and splice live solo guitar and vocal performances into commanding soundscapes. He has performed at numerous Southern California venues and has had his work included on Simballrec's 45 Seconds Of...  as well as self-released recordings. In addition to being a practicing musician, Joe also creates interactive sound installations that use sound as a means of exploring vulnerability and social interconnectedness.
