Feedcrafting

Episode 1: NO PLATFORM/FEEDCRAFTING (Busta, Tian, Keller, @LILINTERNET)

This mix was created around the first half of January, 2020. The decade was already off to a weird and anxious start. Political assassinations, climate fires, election hacking and other uncomfortable weirdness foreshadowed a rough year. How right we were!

NOTE: This isn't  the usual Jumeirah Sound System DJ set. This is more of a DJ Shadow-style sound collage, mixing spoken word, news clips and experimental music. I recorded it all in Ableton and added the quotes and voice-overs afterwards. It's more of a sound collage than a party mix, but lets be honest, it still rocks. 

Some of the clips, subjects and personalities referenced include Charlie Brooker, GretaThunberg, climate change, Brexit, Philomena Cunk, Adam Curtis (lots of Curtis), Vladislov Surkov, Peter Pomerantsev, Edward Snowden, the NSA, Donald Trump, post-truth politics, defeated journalists, Internet filter bubbles, Prozac, George Lakoff, Erol Morris, Robert McNamara, Bjarke Engels, Terrence McKenna, William McDonough and Timothy Morton.

Some of the musical styles it draws together include Dub, Jersey Club, Gqom, Hard Step, Marching Band, Noise, Klezmer, Batida, Acid, Hip Hop, Broken Beat, Moombahton, Kusur and a bit of house.

I hope you enjoy it. The mix sat on my hard drive for a few months because it felt too depressing. The world was getting depressing enough and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I finally mixed a new ending this week, pivoting towards hopeful optimism. 

The first half is still both DEPRESSING and a BATTLE CRY, but the last half ends with a credible degree of hope. 

We're not even half way through 2020, but better things are on the horizon. As Dennis Ferrer once said, "A certain darkness is needed to see the stars."
