The 27th release of katharsis is the album “Alien Implants” by the Siberian artist and composer Dmitri Mazurov. Throughout the 9 tracks and 77 minutes of the album, the listener is submerged into a haunting maze of mystifying experimental electro-acoustic sound portraying distant conspiracies of another time and place. This almost paradoxical juxtaposition of classical instruments with elements from contemporary electronic music is quite novel to katharsis, but fits perfectly with our vision of showcasing the multifaceted emotional and expressive properties of music.

The album starts harshly off with a flow of rocks, stones and underwater gurgling on the intro track “Burevo”, before a flooding of more delicate but yet restless sounds on “Mimicry” performed by Kymatic Ensemble, who are also featured on the evocative title track “Alien Implants”. This expressive focus is vivid throughout the whole album, but especially on tracks like “Hauntology” performed with novel techniques on the accordion played by Roman Malyaykin, or on the archetypical crying of a guitar played with a comb on the track “Weeping”. The whole thing is concluded by an alienesque communication on the track “Morphing”, which is premiered with the announcement of the pre-order.

Esta propuesta musical amalgama diferentes grabaciones de campo realizadas en Abril del 2022 en Quito y sus alrededores, las cuales fueron manipuladas con síntesis granular en ableton live, desarrollando 6 masajes cerebrales que buscan retratar de manera abstracta lo bello, y heterogéneo de nuestro ambiente y paisaje, el cual por diversas circunstancias tal vez damos por sentado y no lo contemplamos.

Browsing the Indonesian war archives from various sources for years, which marked the commencement of the project, HULUBALANG’s BUNYI BUNYI TUMBAL is a personal ‘letting go’ of a long lineage of anger; a tribute to some small village whose ritualistic dance one night was disrupted by external forces, causing the tune to become broken; a dance that was dragged out, wonky between innocence and pain.

Aditya Surya Taruna (aka Kasimyn) is one half of the Indonesian electronic duo Gabbar Modus Operandi known for their acclaimed records PUXXXIMAXXX and HOXXXYA (out via Yes No Wave and SVBKVLT, respectively) and overwhelming live experiences. In 2022, Kasimyn contributed with beats on Björk's latest album, Fossora. After joining Björk on her Cornucopia tour in Japan last week, Kasimyn is announcing his solo album on Drowned by Locals under his new project HULUBALANG.

‘FINTY’ is the debut EP from artist practitioner, producer and DJ JASPER JARVIS. Created during JARVIS’ first year of being open as a trans/non binary person, 'FINTY’ performs as a conjuring of complex moods - a spectrum of reflective moments stemming from personal experiences. JARVIS succeeds in tracing a rich journey through their trans experience, festering moments of panic, hope and anxiety, whilst at the core highlighting marginalised language as the catalyst to re-wiring the precarious nature of being human. 

All profits from the EP sales are to be donated to JARVIS in support of their gender confirming process.

Dreamscape:

The fog, snow, streets … everything had only altered slightly from my memory yet I perceived this world as one that might be a couple years, or even a few centuries, into the future. I was amongst a group of futuristically dressed children, school dropouts turned street dwellers, who had just run away from their homes, and I seemed to be one of them, wearing dark sailor clothes, with black hair just past my shoulders.

We had been hiding for quite a while in the white stairwell of a newly built building, uninhabited since its completion. The children set up a den in the stairwell, equipped with a TV and video games. I had somehow become their leader, directing the others where to safely spend their nights. These children were not afraid of the darkness in this world.

One young girl even managed to communicate with rabbits living in the snow. She often hid in a corner of the stairwell, listening to an old yellow cassette player. The girl believed the sound she heard was a gift from the ancestors – music had vanished in this world, you see. She would listen to recorded lectures and pray in the temple left by her predecessors.

Eventually the hideout was discovered by the building’s construction workers when the children were returning from their scavenging mission, so we were forced to leave and seek new shelter. Once again we retreated along the bustling streets, where neon lights were beaming everywhere, and creeping smog rendered peoples’ faces lost and helpless. Elder street vendors were selling every last bit of their wares, hawking outmoded objects of their forefathers. Finally we arranged some cardboard boxes in an alley, just for one night’s sojourn. We knew it was still a long road ahead. That night felt like a year.

Another morning we were driven out from previous night’s hideout, as we had become accustomed to, and while out scouring the streets for food the girl stumbled upon a forgotten temple. A dense fog hovered in the air, as if the place was high up in the clouds. The temple was too crammed with dark painted bronze figures of canine deities for her to even find a way in. She sensed from these figures, a time of strife and warfare harkening back thousands of years, a time when mankind destroyed the earthly body of Buddha and the Gods. These sacred bodies had subsequently been sold and dispersed throughout the world for thousands of years. This temple had become the haven for these anthropomorphized animal figures since then.

Realizing she had in fact lost consciousness, the girl awoke to find the temple floating among the clouds, an island in the sky. Only then did it dawn upon her that humanity will inevitably return to its primal state among the ancient forests, and that the temple suspended in the heavens contained the ghosts of humanity.
