Aagoo is very pleased to release “Solitary Universe,” a photo book and full length CD by Eraldo Bernocchi and Japanese ambient guitar player Chihei Hatakeyama—five gorgeous, stretched out compositions that will make you feel like you’re trying to catch smoke, or watching fog swirl then disappear across a body of water. The recording is just two treated guitars, and will be coupled with a photo book by visual artist and graphic designer Petulia Mattioli and Yasushi Miura, a Japanese musician and photographer whose work is based on the concept of using easily available tools, like a Nintendo DS, or iPhone, or freeware programs, for example.
Eraldo Bernocchi is an Italian composer, producer, record label owner, and guitarist. He started his career in the late ‘70s as a guitarist in punk bands, and in the mid ‘80s Eraldo co-founded the conceptual audio project Sigillum-S (with Paolo Bandera and Luca di Giorgio), which grew into a highly acclaimed international cult act. In the ‘90s, together with his wife Petulia Mattioli, Eraldo established Verba Corrige Productions, and has collaborated with numerous artists including Mick Harris (SIMM, Black Engine), Bill Laswell (Somma, Charged, Ashes, and numerous others), Nils Petter Molvaer, Harold Budd, Russell Mills, Toshinori Kondo (Charged), Raiz, Almamegretta, Spectre, Sensational, DJ Disk, Professor Shebab, Thomas Fehlmann, Zu (as Black Engine), DJ Olive, Markus Stockhausen, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti (as producer and author), Robin Guthrie, Colin Edwin, and Balazs Pandi, among many others. Uniquely, Eraldo is also known for being invited to play and organize several special events for H.H. The Dalai Lama in Italy. In 2008 Eraldo founded RareNoise Records based in London, where he currently lives.

Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist and musician who lives in the outskirts of Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name, and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. He has released records on Kranky, Room 40, Under The Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Normal, Own Records, and Spekk (as Opitope).
Petulia Mattioli is a polyhedric visual artist working with video, digital photography, graphics, installations, and live multi/visions. She has shown at Palazzo delle Papesse Contemporary Art Center, Siena, Italy; Berliner Kunstsalon, Berlin, Germany; SeeMe Exhibition Space, New York, USA; Palazzo Ducale, Genoa, Italy; and Galleria Giulia Contemporary Art Gallery, Rome, Italy, among others. She has designed albums for such labels as Subrosa, Shitkatapult, Universal, BMG, RareNoise Records, Palm Pictures, and many more. She currently lives in London.

Place Language is an international non-profit compilation album project inspired by the themes found in Robert Macfarlane’s widely-acclaimed book ‘Landmarks’. In particular it focuses on the book’s extensive topographic glossaries, the “word-hoard” of depictive landscape terms gathered from 30 different languages, dialects and sub-dialects around Britain & Ireland and divided into sections by type of terrain (Flatlands, Uplands, Waterlands, Coastlands, Underlands, Northlands, Edgelands, Earthlands and Woodlands). Relying on these topograms, or “tiny place poems”, as creative prompts, Place Language seeks to both inspire a renewed interest in our surroundings and reinvigorate our appreciation for the audible textures & patterns that characterize a place in keeping with the book’s stated desire to “re-wild” our vocabulary.

The collection features the work of 28 different sound-artists, field recordists, and musicians from around the globe each of whom selected a Landmarks topogram and recorded an impression of it thus adding rich new aspects of dimensionality through the act of sonification. These selections cover all nine of the book’s glossaries along with place-words of new coinage as prompted by the blank one which Macfarlane leaves at the end of the book for readers to fill in from their own experience. The end result is a truly global and collaborative survey of place, language, and sound.

If you recall, exactly a month ago, on November 3rd, I have premiered a track by Roger Goula from the upcoming Various Artists compilation, titled Ambient Layers, which is scheduled to be released tomorrow, December 4th, on 7K! imprint. I retrace my words and see that I was processing the news about a second lockdown in the UK. Well, yesterday the stores have opened up again. So at least the government has kept its word and did not stretch it further. But things, of course, are not the same. It’s still suppressed, a little cold, a little dark, and slightly empty. And as the city’s waking up, I’ve got this beauty of a track to share and get us ready for another round. I hope that you have recognized this American [and Brussels-based] composer from his name alone. If not, let me remind you of his work with Brian McBride as Stars Of The Lid; with Christina Vantzou as The Dead Texan; and of course, with Dustin O’Halloran as A Winged Victory For The Sullen. And I’m not even diving into details of his film-scoring credits, which include Jóhann Jóhannsson and his Golden Globe-winning soundtrack for The Theory of Everything. Adam Wiltzie‘s most recent collaborative work, with its absolutely gorgeous contemporary classical and cinematic ambient treatments, and stunning live performances, has even got the monumental Ninja Tune to join on the party. For this single piece, Wiltzie revisits an earlier recording, a slow-burner of an orchestral immersion, reworked to the perfect intersection of where the neoclassical and ambient sounds reside.


‘How To Disappear Inside A Thirty Piece Orchestra’, was recorded in Budapest in 2014. It is an excerpt from the first recording of the Stars of the Lid follow up to ‘And Their Refinement of the Decline’. Subsequently, this piece was abandoned and left in the lurch as time elapsed. After some contemplation, Adam is letting the world have a taste of what could have never been, and what is possibly yet to come.


The compilation is already available for pre-order, and from the tracklisting alone, you can see that it’s an impressive roster of artists coming together to showcase the genre. Among the featured artists on the release, my favorites include Ryan Teague, Tilman Robinson, Robert Lippok, Michel Banabila & Machinefabriek, Pjusk, and Midori Hirano, and plenty others to discover along the way. This could be a beautiful opener for those just getting into all that is ‘ambient’ or a wonderful treat for those in the know at the end of this year. Oh, and I think I’ll be back [rather shortly] with yet another surprise!
