An insightful discussion with Tom Leek who is the brains behind one of the biggest platforms offering accessible content with some of the top artists in underground house and techno scene. Upon a long list of names, some of the most notable artists he has worked with include OneMan, Richy Ahmed and Alan Fitzpatrick. 

He also runs NYX marketing which we delve into in our recent catch up with him, where he explains top DJs use his company to further project their brand image and music and even explains how closely he works with artists. Some of his clients include: Amelie Lens, PanPot and Archie Hamilton.

We recently caught up with Darren for the first ever written interview on New Wave. 

Q)Starting back at your roots, could you tell us a little bit about some of your earliest musical memories? Are you from Essex originally?  

A) Yes I was born in Barking then moved to Basildon in Essex when I was very young, i was an 80s kid and Hip Hop and Electro was the new big thing, I got into breakdancing and graffiti, the Street Sounds Electro series was basically the sound track for those early years. Breakdancing for me was short lived but the music and graffiti stayed with me. I suppose the first real musical experience would be when I started to go to raves my first was a big outdoor rave in Essex called Raindance(Jenkins Lane) back in 1991 I was only 16 at the time so it was quite an eye opener.

Q)Were there any people or parties you were attending in particular that helped you delve into DJing and producing?

A)Not really no, I started collecting records in 1988 and got my first set of decks when I was 14 back in 1989. This was about 2 years before I had even been to a rave or club I was always into the music more than the party scene itself, saying that though I did go to a few raves back then and they were 
amazing but I was not a big raver. I was originally influenced by the Hip Hop DJs as a young teenager, I just thought it was the coolest.

Q)You have self-released a lot of old school/hardcore sets from the 90s. Can you discuss what the sound means to you? Did you release those for purely nostalgic purposes or do you still play those kind of tracks in your sets today?

A) Nostalgia is a small part of it but the main reason is that I still love that music as much as I did back then. Basically I do those mixes for myself to listen to but I like to share them on Soundcloud for anyone that wants to have a listen. I have created two playlists 1988-1991 and 1992-1993 and I will 
keep recording more and adding to the lists. I've been collecting rave music more or less from the start of it and I have a large collection of old school records and I'm still buying to this day filling in the gaps. All the podcasts and radio appearances I have done over the last few years have been all 
new music mixes, a lot of the new stuff I play does sound like its from back in the day there’s quite a few producers out there making some great old school sounding Electro, Techno, breakbeat and Jungle I love it and I am always keeping an eye on the new releases on a daily basis to grab them as they come out, as I noticed a lot of the old school sounding stuff can sell out really quick if you sleep on it you can miss out and end up at the mercy of the scalpers on Discogs.

Q) Could you discuss how you got into production and when did you fully settle into the electro sound as a producer? How do you try be creative and make your music stand out?

A)  I started producing about ten years ago before that I had no real interest in making music really I was happy just Djing, playing and collecting records. I suppose what started it for me was when I started recording my mixes to my computer rather than tape. I started playing about with the editing tools on Goldwave and Audacity which lead to making little re edits just for fun. I later got a Mac which had Garageband built in, I had a play around with that and then I was hooked I then upgraded to Logic Pro things really took off after that. I don’t think that I try to make my music stand out, its more that I try to make the kind of music that I would want to find in a record shop, my music 
is very self indulgent I love mixing Techno and Electro with Breakbeats. I think what I make is a mixture of Techno, Electro, Acid House, Breakbeat, Hardcore with a little bit Hip Hop woven in to it and maybe Jungle at a push, I suppose its basically Freestyle.

New Wave Podcast 036: Joe Kadhim 

Working tirelessly behind the scenes, Joe Kadhim has spent the past 8 years perfecting his craft as a DJ and more recently a producer. His love for the scene is unmatched, having more than earned his stripes as a clubber and a DJ. His presence is felt across the North East, having become a valuable member of the Haze teams and featuring across various other parties in Newcastle, South Shields and Peterlee.

Joe's obsession with dance music started at an age much younger than many. He was able to dig past a certain threshold of house and trance DJs in those early years, developing an understanding of the scene not many his age had. This mentality has translated throughout his years as an artist, as he has built an expansive collection which always keeps you moving on the dance floor. He has been able to refine and develop a signature sound which combines rhythmic drum orientated tracks with a sprinkle of melodic and trance elements. 

As a producer, he's done what a lot of young producers are to impatient to do and that is: wait. Unlike most, he has decided to build up a collection of tracks and refine his sound before rushing into sending or releasing music. In an industry where everyone demands instant success, it is refreshing to see Joe take this approach. 

We recently caught up with Joe to discuss how he got into DJing at such a young age, his love for the groovier side of dance music, starting his own club night and the reason for never releasing any of his tracks.

Injecting new blood into the electro and ghetto scene, LuBeat enjoyed her most successful year in 2020. Known for her daring and creative mixing style, the Siberian born DJ and producer combines the fun nature of ghetto samples with raw, fast electro sounds. Her willingness to connect and support fellow artists has allowed to her build a cult following in both her hometown and across Europe. 

Her music today is merely a progression of her early obsession with rap and hip hop. She lists artists like Eminem and Wu Tang as inspirations in her youth, which many of her fellow artists use in their ghetto samples to this day. In her hometown, LuBeat is the main driving force behind the electro scene, she explains she wants to create a community where artists can share their music and skills in a willing environment. Unlike the majority of Russia, the thirst for this sound is absent - which is something she his hoping to change after the pandemic.

Her mix for New Wave is a perfect representation of not only her skills behind the decks but also the mood and message she is trying to push as an artist. She speaks very highly of her peers and is continuously pushing their music any chance she gets. We discuss this topic in our interview segment, along with her hometowns love for garage, the album she has been working on and her plans to travel to Ukraine and Belarus.

New Wave Podcast 039: Donny Rotten

South London based artist David Pink who plays under the alias Donny Rotten is forever experimenting with sounds of all shades. Primarily known for his glistening disco-funk and old school French inspired house tracks, however his recent explorations have seen him revisit a more industrial and break beat infused sound which was his entry point into electronic music. Over the past year, the video content he released on social media showcasing his experimental and creative approach to his production has allowed him to reach new heights and further grow his brand. 

Music was something that David grasped at a young age, gaining experience on the guitar and even venturing into a very short-lived signing phase. This transitioned into hip-hop and jungle in his teens, which is still prevalent in his music today. David has built up what he tells us is an overwhelming amount of material, ideas and musical threads, which has allowed him to be so adventurous when creating his music. Quite refreshingly he shares his creative processes on social media, displaying how he chops and sample his records.

It was an honour to have an artist so musically gifted as David on New Wave, his drive and work ethic is second to none and we foresee his stock continuing to rise over the next year. We recently caught up with David to discuss his musical roots, the Indie band he was part of in his teens, living in Bristol and what keeps his tracks authentic.

Spanish born music enthusiast Andres Mosteyrin has found joy and success in various forms and alias', however his most fruitful venture is under the name of Speed Gonzales. His obsession for the classical sound of 90s electro set him on a path which has seen him go from strength to strength as a producer, DJ and party curator. His sound and style are based upon the warm squelchy drexciyan sounds he admires whilst injecting a slice of his expressive and fun personality by adding seductive and crowd-pleasing vocals.

Although residing from a small city in Spain which often neglects it's music scene, Andres enjoyed success at a young age playing in Indie bands and forming an electronic pop duo Alarido Mongolico - which he still releases under to this day. He now spends most of his time forming and progressing his music under the Speed Gonzales alias. With a string of impressive releases on Childsplay, 199 and Green House, his popularity has significantly risen allowing him to do play at some of the most exclusive parties in London.

He admits that each alias he performs under is an amplification of one aspect of his personality and ever since joining the Happy Endings team (one of the biggest queer parties in Europe) he has been able to fully come out of his shell. We caught up with Speed Gonzales to discuss these parties and what they stand for, where he draws inspiration from when making music, and his love for  fast, euphoric and percussive music.

Das Booty pioneer Rory Kelly joins us on New Wave this week for a deep dive into his fun, daring collection. Rory found his true calling playing ghetto music after a revelation on the dancefloor itself. Having quickly developed his own formidable prowess behind the decks, he now looks to strengthen and promote fellow artists; in the shape of parties and the label. 

Although he has a wealth of experience as a raver, DJ and producer Rory's most successful venture has been with Das Booty. Dedicated to showcasing the sound he loves, he's been able to create not only a successful brand but also a cult following. The parties themselves embody everything that made Rory fall in love with the scene - fast weird music in a dark dingy setting. After a string of successful parties, booking the likes of Jerome Hill and The Dexorcist, Das Booty expanded their output by launching a label alongside Dave Strange. With a growing pool of talented artists they have collaborated with, their future is certainly looking strong.

We recently caught up with Rory to discuss the void clubs left on his social life, Jerome Hill's influence on his music, the lack of spaces in London and production problems.

Quite impressively, 17 year old Tom Scannell has been able to convey his own vision of electronic music, taking inspiration from UK sounds both past and present and is embodied through his Tommy 2000 alias. Having already carved out a resume that any young artist would only dream of, he continues to strive for his next move in the industry. His music has already gathered the attention of some of the scenes biggest names and with the firm backing of Shampain and Kettama, he is ready to solidify himself as more than an up and comer. 

Unlike most, Tom was exposed to electronic music at a rather young age, with his Dad being an avid raver in the 80s/90s, meaning he was able to absorb all of his knowledge and love for the scene. He oozes creativity and passion meaning his progression as a producer has been fast and although his music has already touched different genres, he has zoned in on a sound heavily influenced by Floating Points. 

We recently caught up with Tommy to discuss the influence his parents had on his music, entering a club for the first time, learning GarageBand whilst on holiday and the overwhelming support on his tracks.

Like most, DJ SkodaOctavia used the recent pandemic as an opportunity to re-engage with the underground music scene as an artist. In recent years he's been an avid raver and music connoisseur exploring various hubs of electronic music across Europe. However his recent move to Prague kick started the eventual birth of his new alias DJ SkodaOctavia, driven by his new found love for the ever expanding ghetto tech scene. Its not only the fast, daring nature of the genre but also the sense of creative freedom which allows you take your sets/production in any direction that has drawn him in. 

Luckily he has been able to sample several cities which have a deep rooted electronic music culture. Growing up in Brussels he enjoyed a sharp introduction to the rave scene. Jump up drum and bass had a big influence on young Belgians at the time, alongside the rich history of techno and hardcore which is paramount in Belgium. These experiences have certainly contributed to his progression as a well rounded artist, as he's able to take inspiration and sounds from various niche scenes.

The launch of his newly founded platform Shampoo Shrimp is a collaborative effort with fellow Prague artists. They've used this an opportunity to connect and engage with the vast depth of talent within the ghetto and electro scene and are in the process of curating a VA which will drop in the next few weeks. We recently caught up with DJ SkodaOctavia to discuss this project and their goals, we also discussed the lockdown parties in Prague, the creativity within the Prague nightlife and much more.

WithoutKKK has everything we value in an artist. The Tbilisi based DJ and producer plays a fast and daring brand of music capable of mesmerising any crowd and has the passion to promote fellow artists in the form of his exciting new platform Your Character. His prowess behind the decks and in the studio almost come naturally to him and over the past year he's used his passion for music to express his emotion and personality through his alias WithoutKKK.

Being situated in a city which has such a rich and historic club culture has certainly impacted him as a person. He describes the club scene in Tbilisi as the ultimate escapism from everyday life and admits that the atmosphere and community feel is what drew him in. Although having not played in front of crowd before, the steady flow of notable releases in 2020 and 2021 have made him one of the most exciting artists coming out of the city at the moment. Having featured on the likes of Crude, PosseUp and Hyperdome his stock has risen, meaning he is in prime position to kickstart his career.

New Wave Podcast 046: DJ Manu C

Although having perfected her craft as a DJ years ago, Manu C found her home in the ghetto and electro community over the recent lockdown, emerging as one of the hottest young artists in the scene. With a natural ear for music, her sound has took various pit stops during her time as a DJ, however her recent rise was due to the plethora of knee-jerking and high voltage mixes released over the past year. Her bubbly and expressive personality is certainly portrayed into her mixes where she is able to express herself whilst creating a deep musical narrative.

Her prowess behind the decks has never been in question, featuring regularly in the local scene, but she admits that she does not have the freedom to fully convey her true vision as an artist due to the lack of support for ghetto and electro music. Residing in Buenos Aires and playing this style of music, does have it's limitations, due to the scene being heavily commercialised. However with a move to Europe planned for the future, her future is very bright. She has already made several links with labels and parties; including Former City Records and Sound Transitions.

We recently caught up with Manu to discuss her lockdown life, clubs opening during lockdown in Argentina, the Argetinian festival scene and nerves when DJing in front of a crowd.

Irish native and electro specialist, High Fidelity is known for his abstract electro and techno productions, which hugely complement the fast-paced energy found in his sets.
His catalogue continues to grow, propelled by new releases with Wachita China’s WC Fast Music label, Edinburgh based label Milkit and a VA vinyl release with Irish label Choki Biki Records. His latest delivery ‘Frequency Shift’ released on the 28th of February with Scottish label WhatGoesUp. The track features as part of the 11 track various artists album which includes fantastic contributions from a roster of Irish and Scottish artists in aid of SAMH, a charity based in Scotland devoted to combating mental health issues.
A host of club and festival appearances across the Island, including Life Festival and Higher Vision, have provided a platform to propel his distinctive performances to a wider audience. His releases have continued to receive international support from artists such as Salome, Partiboi69, Hoe_mies, Monster, NastyKingKurl, Wachita China and more.

This weeks guest Pagan has been building a repute as one of Ireland and the UK's most exciting up and comers, building a sonic palette that weaves in and out of trance-like euphoria, gun finger breaks and vibrant techno. His ever expanding discography impressively visits several sub-genres of electronic music, meaning he is able to take a listener through various emotions. 

During his short and rapid rise, he has enjoyed various accreditation's from some of the scenes biggest platforms; including being nominated as one of the hottest young producers by AVA Festival and several features on BBC Radio 1. With constant support from top DJs and now a regular in the club and festival circuit his career is starting to take shape.

New Wave Podcast 049: Nasty King Kurl

Berlin-based producer Nasty King Kurl entered the scene in 2017 and has continuously created a body of work that combines a myriad of influences with a skill for crafting character-filled yet devastatingly effective dancefloor cuts. His background is firmly rooted in modern hip hop and incorporates a lot of live elements into his performances. This feeds into his productions, mixing an often time hectic soundscape with pop sensibilities with a heavy dose of sampling. 

He has also ventured into creating his own label Nasty Enterprises where he is able to give the platform to producers who have the same likeminded approach. He admits it serves as playground for a more humorous approach to modern electronic music where the releases include collaborations from Kuno, Christopher Pau, Karma She, Shawn Cartier, Morwell and more.

Robin Tasi has carved out a recognisable sound which fuses breaks, electro and acid in a passionate and daring manner. His relentless approach to his production and DJ sets is almost an oxymoron to his laid-back and respective personality. This is perfectly highlighted by the mood of our relaxed chat compared to the intense hour of power which runs perfectly down the blurred line that exists between techno electro and breaks.

Although his sets often are a frantic and jagged ride across varied sonic territories, he is able to do so with such grace forming a connection with whoever who is listening. He admits that in a club environment he wants to offer the ultimate escapism to the crowd. In his local town of Dortmund, a city which promotes the grass root artists as appose to big lineups, he is able to do this.

We recently caught up with the Dortmund based artist to discuss the differences between Dortmund and Berlin, his label Acid Wave Records and his hectic schedule since the return of clubs.

Honing her skills as a DJ in Newcastle, Manchester born artist Becky Woodcock’s hard work and pursuit of music has led her to the upper echelons of the scene, perfectly conveyed with her recent impressive warm up sets for Call Super and Interplanetary Criminal. In a year which signified a massive entrance into the Newcastle scene she actually wraps it up as one of it's most pivotal figures. Perhaps more importantly than her continued growth as an artist, she has become a colossal presence, actively voicing the necessity for a fresh and diverse community.

She attributes her desire to get into DJing to the already expansive music knowledge gained at school. Playing in bands and even an orchestra led her on the eventual path of being a DJ. Not only has Becky managed to master her skills behind the decks in such a short space of time, but has also diversified her music collection so that she is flexible for any gig. Whether it be flexing her signature UK flavoured break sounds in a packed out room 2 or chugging out some deep eclectic house to a filling room, she certainly understands the assignment. Since bursting onto the scene, Becky has been of the mind set that she isn't just here to play tunes, her constant push for a larger female talent pool in the North has been refreshing to see.

Ohmydais has took the London scene by storm over the past few years. Her moody brews of electro and breaky flavours have regularly hit the Rinse FM airwaves, as well as through her own genre-deriding residency on Threads Radio. After devoting a lot of time to supplying her listeners with a constant stream of content, she was able to translate this to the dancefloors this year when clubs finally opened. 

Daisy prides herself on being able to provide a high-intensity set that holds subtle glimpses of melodic lightness and with her breakneck approach to mixing and infectious energy behind the decks she is always able to connect with the audience. Her recent appearances on exclusive live streams such as Fold and HÖR to accompany her regular gigs at The Cause further solidify why she is on the way to reaching the upper echelons of selector stardom in the UK underground scene.

Newcastle based DJ: Murg is arguably on the forefront of extremely young and talented producers bursting onto the scene at the moment. His recognisable sound has found its way in to a lot of DJ sets over the past few years, with his production ranging from floor filling disco edits to roof raising hard house bangers. His most notable release was the popular remix of Kylie Minogue - Love At First Sight, which gathered attention from Houz Collective, which he has recently released his first EP (Disco Lovin')on. 
Although based in Newcastle, Murg has been able to play in various cities across the UK, with more dates pencilled in for 2020.

Leeds born, Newcastle based Meg Ward has had a whirlwind of a journey since her first club set in 2018. She has gone from strength to strength both with her DJ sets and her own production. With regular sets at some of the biggest clubs in Newcastle, she has held down residencies with Ape-X and Time Trip.

After releasing tracks like: Thank U, which was a homage to one of her biggest musical influences Ariana Grande and her first EP; Tyneside, she was gathered attention from some of the hottest record labels in the country. She is also a regular collaborator with long-time friend Murg. The pair recently put records out on Houz collective, which are being played across clubs in the UK.

The first 20 minutes is a catch up with Meg to discuss her musical inspirations, EP success, oppurtinities for women in the industry and future plans. You can then be treated to an hour of music from Meg herself. Showcasing her wide collection of music, ranging from hard hosue to breaks, with a few unreleased tracks of her own.

Our first venture outside of the North East brings us to Sheffield based DJ George Boynton, who plays under his alias DJ Lost Cat. After being invested in all aspects of music in his youth, George decided to study music production at college, where his love for electronic music began. However his sound really started to take shape when he moved to Sheffield, taking aspects from all UK genres, including bass, breaks and techno. This is perfectly embodied in his mix for New Wave, which was recorded live at Groundwork - one of the most distinctive nights in Sheffield. 

George also founded and continues to run Magnetic North, which can best be described as a forward thinking electronic music night. He has taken this event to some of the most unique spaces in Sheffield, booking DJs like Nez, Re:Ni and Laska. With the latest event taking place at an art exhibition, he was able to offer his crowd a different space and vibe to anything they'd had before. 

We recently caught up with George to discuss how early musical tastes have shaped his sound today, moving to Sheffield and the ongoing evolution of Magnetic North.

By any measure, PADDY has had an impressive rise when it comes to his productions and DJ sets. Going from being indulged in the Manchester party scene to playing at its biggest event: Warehouse Project, he has quickly established himself as one of the leading figures in the house and disco scene in the UK. 

He attained a large following through releasing his own tracks, which in his early days were primarily formed from disco samples, but have recently evolved into more progressive electronic tools. Through the success of his production, PADDY has been able to play a wide range of gigs, both as a headliner and a warm up. His most notable being a Warehouse Project set supporting Patrick Topping in early 2019. He has also had the opportunity to showcase his talents abroad in the arguably the biggest music hub in Europe: Berlin and a tour of Australia. 

He is continually looking to not only evolve his sound but also help the community evolve, by giving like minded artists a platform to share music, through the Inner Circle group on Facebook.

It was a pleasure to have Paddy on for an interview, where we discuss the Inner Circle, the scene in Manchester, starting his own record label and future gigs.

New Wave Podcast 004: PADDY

Over the past 5 years Teddy Silva has been making waves in the house and UKG scene; as a DJ, a promoter and more recently a producer. Currently based in Manchester, he runs and plays regularly for Digitalism, which has become one of the best parties to attend in Manchester.

Teddy first began DJing in his hometown of York, for an event night called Mercury, which he started with like-minded artists wanting to break into the scene. They used it is an opportunity to play regularly at some of the main venues in York, however, always felt restricted due to the scene in York being quite small. A move to Manchester was when he started to come into his own, in terms of finding his sound and getting the chance to warm up for bigger DJs. This was when he became involved with Digitalism, the event he now runs and plays for. Over the past 2 years, Teddy has both booked and opened for some of the best up and coming house DJs such as: Subjoi, Lone, Holly Lester, Big Miz and Bobby Analogue. Digitalism has definitely thrived in a competitive and somewhat dying market, pulling in big crowds on a consistent basis, which is a credit to what Teddy and his mates have been doing. As well as balancing a full-time job, university, DJing and managing Digitalism, Teddy has been in the studio, with long-time friend Popka to create an EP, which will be released in 2020. 

In the interview we have a chat about his move from York to Manchester, the current state of club life in Manchester and the UK and future plans as an artist. His mix is highly inspired from UK sound, with breaks and rave elements present throughout.

New Wave Podcast 005: Teddy Silva

Ever since falling in love with dance music many years ago Sam’s knowledge and skills have progressed every single day. His early sounds stem from a lot of Japanese electronic music – hence the name Sam goes to Tokyo. However, he has become more indulged in every aspect of disco, taking inspiration from Giorgio Moroder, Delia Derbyshire, and Jean-Michel Jarre. With his productions, he stays true to what these artists created in the beginning but also modernises the tracks but adding his own twist. 

Although originally starting out solely as a producer, it was only a matter of time before he stepped behind a pair of decks. A move to Manchester for university was when he first started to make movements in the DJ scene. As a result of his production becoming very popular on Soundcloud and getting releases channels like Bolting Bits and Maslow Unknown, he was able to secure gigs at some of Manchester’s biggest venues – Hidden and Soup Kitchen. After his final year at uni, he decided to dedicate his time to music, investing in some high-end synthesisers to enhance his production, which is evident on his latest releases. 

We sat down with Sam to discuss the recent and upcoming changes to the dance music scene as a result of COVID-19, his take on classic and modern disco and the help of Suburban Belfast.

New Wave Podcast 006: Sam Goes To Tokyo

Derry born Belfast based duo Hotline have been one of the brightest sparks in the ever-growing Irish scene over the past few years. Oisin and Ciaron met whilst working at Shine in Belfast in 2015 but it wasn’t until 2017 when they became a duo and started playing gigs. With their love for music evolving over time, they became more invested in all aspects of music. Whilst originally DJing at house parties, they got their first club set which received great feedback and haven’t looked back ever since. They have since secured a residency at UFO Belfast, where they play every Wednesday at peak time, allowing them to be more flexible with their track selection. 

More recently Hotline have taken up producing, in which they have an interesting approach, where Ciaron takes a back seat and offers creative input whilst Oisin is the technological and translates it into Ableton. Although never self-releasing any music on their own channel, they send all of their music out to channels which they like to listen to. This has earned them features and releases on Definite Part Material, Moskalus and HOUZ. They are still yet to fine tune their sound and limit it to one genre, and continue to make a variety of sounds, like UKG, breaks and even venturing into the heavier side of techno. 

We recently sat down with Hotline, to discuss the competitiveness of the Irish Scene, recent gig with Shampain and ambitions for the rest of 2020.

New Wave Radio: Sunday Club 001 w/CØSTELLØ, Dyslecta, Westy

The second instalment of the Sunday Club podcast, we're joined by New Wave residents CØSTELLØ and Dyslecta and previous podcast guest DJ Lost Cat.

We delve a lot into how experiences in clubs/festivals correlate to your DJ sets and productions, and how you can be creative without them experiences during lockdown. We delve into each individuals process of making a track from start to finish and how the range of genres can vary in terms of; sets, productions and general listening. 

You can also be treated to some sneak previews on some tracks that DJ Lost Cat and Dyslecta have been working on.

New Wave Radio Sunday Club 002 w/CØSTELLØ, Dyslecta, DJ Lost Cat

Although not having many actual club experiences through his teens Shalom was thoroughly indulged in the electronic music scene from a young age. DJIng at house parties at a young age in home town of Norfolk was his way of projecting his skills and music taste. However once moving to Newcastle for university he was able to fully fulfil his wish to play in front of a willing crowd. He was involved in many parties in the North East and even tried his hand at throwing his own parties. 

After falling out of touch with playing in clubs for a long period of time, he found his feet again when being offered the chance to open for Nicolas Lutz at SR44. Since then he has never looked back, and has rekindled his love for minimal, deep house. As a way of getting back into the scene he started Daze with fellow like minded artists who wanted an opportunity to play the music they loved. Going from strength to strength, Daze has blossomed into one of the biggest collectives in the North East. Their quest for unique spots in Newcastle have meant they have offered ravers a different vibe and experience to a normal club night. They have continued to innovate and bring fresh ideas to the Newcastle scene.

He has also been involved with the running of the DAZE soundcloud page which has grown into a well established channel, with a podcast series and track premieres from artists around the world.

A Scroll Through Existence is young Durham based producer Ruben Bell's first release. At 16 he is already beyond his years with his production and mixing, and has definitely caught our eye here at New Wave. This track offers a nice balance of heavy breaks but also a lighter a tone with the use of the squelchy synth.

New Wave Podcast 017: Dyslecta

Dyslecta’s tendency for club and genre experimentation always left the door open for a artist wanting to keep things fresh and interesting with every release going forward. His music has been notoriously difficult to pin down, as his shifting sound has stretched in simultaneous directions over the years. Nevertheless, he has been able to craft his own vision of electronic music, taking inspiration from UK sounds both past present and is embodied through his Dyslecta alias. His DJ sets are no different, with the capability to effortlessly moves through genres, while applying context, he has been able to solidify him in the Newcastle scene.

Unlike most, Dyslecta was exposed to electronic music at an abnormally young age, with his Dad being an avid raver in the 80s/90s, he was able to absorb all of his knowledge and love for the scene. Being an advanced producer and DJ by the time he left school, he was well positioned to enter the club scene. Although at the time he wasn't exposed to the club scene on a large scale, he had familiarised himself with the scene, through stories from his dad and the internet. It was his move to Newcastle which allowed him to grow as artist, as the weekly club nights started to translate into his music.

Over the past 3 years, Dyslecta has worked his way up the Newcastle scene. Originally, DJing at house parties was his way of projecting his skills and music taste, but after the success of his releases and impressing when offered a club set, he has solidified himself as one of the cities most recognisable residents. The culmination of his journey is timely, with him now being finished uni, his music is gaining some well deserved attention and he is now in a position to kick on. 

We recently caught up with Dyslecta to discuss his final uni project, the influence of his Dad, breaking through in Newcastle and future plans.

New Wave Podcast 020: False Persona 

Sean Birch who plays under the alias False Persona is one of the many byproducts of the resurgence of electro within the past few years. As the winds of tastes change and more people discovered/ rediscovered the genre, Sean was pushing a sound that both paid homage to the greats that did it before him while adding his own innovating sounds. This has lead to much recognition from artists old and new, with his music being played by on the radio greats such as Umwelt, but also making good connections with fellow up and coming artists like Hermeth.

Sean's success is a result of obsession and hard work, with his production journey starting back when he was 13, he continuously strives to get better. He admits it took him a while to come into his own with producing and even thought about giving up, but once a string of self releases were well received he was able to grow in confidence. His sound has spanned across many genres and alias' over the years, making lo-fi tracks under 'DJ Something' and deep house under 'Block', however under alias 'False Persona' he has created his best and most successful tracks. He accredits this to the freedom and creativity he is allowed when making broken and offbeat rhythms. 

Although he hasn't established himself as a DJ in his local scene, which struggles to pull in big crowds for underground music, he has made significant strides to build a platform and name for himself. This has lead to him to a residency show on Vandelay Radio and guest appearances on various podcasts. We discuss this in the interview, where he expresses his desire to play out, and we also discuss the transition from lo-fi to electro, rap influences and future releases.

With a new look and a new concept, we will be releasing podcasts every month with round table discussions with club owners, events and festival mangers, collectives, record labels and record stores runners. 

This week we invite Joseph Worley and Jack Lear who have pioneered one of the most exciting small festivals founded in the last few years. Westival is situated in Pembrokeshire countryside, West Wales and just 5 minutes from the beach and offers ravers one of the most unique festival experiences in the UK. They pride themselves on creating a friendly and warm vibe, not only with the artists they book but the location, as they are the only festival in the UK to be situated on National Trust Park. 

We sat down with Joseph and Jack to discuss the creation and evolution of Westival, the planning that is required when starting a festival, the competition with larger festivals and their experiences.

New Wave Podcast 031: Westy

Both Westy's ability behind the decks and knowledge across all genres of music transcends many his age. Although originally known for his signature jacking house style when first on the Newcastle circuit, his sound has evolved incorporating a lot of more genres, whilst still supplying them infectious grooves and uplifting melody-rich chords.

Westy's early obsession was old school hi-hop and from a young age he was able to dig past a certain threshold of hip-hop artists and develop an understanding not many his age had. Spending endless hours digging through Youtube to find tracks was how he remembered spending summer holidays at the ages of 11-14. This mentality has translated throughout Westy's musical journey as he has built a collection over several years which leaves you mesmerised on the dance floor and questioning where and how he found this track.

His residency at Ill Behavior was something which has shaped who he is as a DJ today, learning invaluable lessons from both opening and closing for many successful artists. After seeing him play several times, it is still amazing to see how he is always able find the perfect balance of playing exactly what he crowd wants to hear whilst pushing the boundaries. In our interview we discuss the main influences he had as a child on his taste of music, running his own event in Durham, experiencing Newcastle as student compared to someone outside the city and why he hasn't fully delved into production.

New Wave Podcast 034: Riot Code

The unknown duo formally known as Riot Code have opted to keep their identities hidden, which is far from a gimmick. Their intentions is to have their high energy, rave infused sound do their talking. Quite refreshingly, for once in today’s musical environment, we know more about the artist’s sound than we do about them. Over the past year they have become of the most in demand techno acts in the scene, and their impressive unreleased forthcoming tracks have been appearing across numerous established livestreams, mixes and radio platforms. 

Individually they have established themselves behind the scenes in the music industry, however 2020 was the year they fully announced themselves as artists. Their lock down tapes series gave them a chance to collaborate with young artists and offered a platform to push music in unprecedented times. However it was their own tracks which were gaining the most attention, opting to release edits of tracks that they were passionate about, which they admit were the most fun to produce. Since then their audience has grown which has allowed them to work with several established labels such as Carouse and ReBoot.
