Americana is a large-scale concert work Martin Cordner wrote for the New York Staff Band's 2015 tour of the United Kingdom. Divided into two main parts, Cordner extracted the titles of these from the Star Spangled Banner: 1)Home of the Brave; 2)Land of the Free. In his program note Cordner states "this two-part work paints a musical picture of the land we know today as the USA and seeks to capture some of the essence of American classical and contemporary music. With Copland-esque themes and driving rock rhythms, the piece provides a platform for the NYSB to showcase some of its principal players. The hymn How Firm a Foundation underpins the work and part two achieves serenity in the tune Nettleton to which the words, "Come, thou Fount of Every Blessing" are associated. The first harks back to Native America and speaks of the pursuit of peace and harmony. It opens with mysterious-sounding chords and native percussion sounds that paint a soundscape of an unknown land. Six words from Native American languages are sung - they represent the word peace in six of the Native American languages." In the joyful dance that concludes the eclectic selection, the listener may recognize musical quotes from such 'Americana' as Williams' Liberty Fanfare, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, and the Civil War tune When Johnny Comes Marching Home, all supporting the triumphant, majestic return of the folk hymn Foundation upon which the composer had structured his imaginative score.

John Lennon's great anthem from a 1967 live, global television broadcast certainly projected a powerful message: All You Need is Love. Here, Dorothy Gates links that powerful slogan, initially basing her arrangement on a version by Canadian Brass, with quotes from General William Booth's great song, O Boundless Salvation (after Sir Dean Goffin's famous setting). The love being proclaimed by the band transcends the original, pointing the listener to a different kind of love, the divine love of the Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ. That is the love the world truly needs, and the band continues to proclaim that truth whenever and wherever it is called upon to share its music - and at the same time, 'entertaining'-ministry.

Goff Richards has arranged and composed extensively for not only BBC Radio and Television, but also famous performing groups like the King's Singers, the Swingle Singers, London Brass, major British orchestras, and a host of military and brass bands. For the latter, he has supplied a wealth of effective, short pieces, including New York, New York. What better sonic icon for our New York musicians than this 'anthem' made so famous by Frank Sinatra in 1979, and first sung by Lisa Minelli for the 1977 Martin Scorsese film. "Start spreadin' the news...I'm leavin' today...I want to be a part of it, New York, New York."

This brilliant “fanfare-march” was written by the Staff Bandmaster, Brigadier Richard E. Holz, for the New York Staff Band’s triumphal tour of Great Britain in 1960 and featured the entire cornet section of the band to mark a sparkling beginning of every festival.  With fanfares and brilliant technical displays, the cornetists send forth cascades of trumpeting while the accompaniment reiterates the battle song, We’re a band that shall conquer the foe.  Quotations of Beethoven’s victory motif from his 5th symphony are pyramided into a finale.  Heralds of Victory is recorded on the New York Triumphonic label in the long play (LP 6) album King of Kings.  It is also recorded on the Ceaseless Service CD celebrating the Staff Band’s 120 years of service.  The following text by William Hodgson from which the composition was titled:

I believe we shall win,
If we fight in the strength of the King.

The climax is reached with the Morse Code symbol of V for Victory (…-) echoing and re-echoing throughout the ensemble and band in a grand symphonic fanfare of sound.
