Basement

And then the moon peeps through the trees and paints its pencil pictures, and with a smile they come alive and dance like half-light spectres.
My mother said “this bittersweetness means the fruit is ready” but I guess I feel we’re on the way out now, like spinning pennies.

I can’t avert my gaze, the rabbit stays affixed like stone to bitumen, and you seem to shine halogen light though your eyes’ empty sockets and when I am floating on the sea your cliff-top bonfire guides me. When I’m suspended in the sky you raise a roaring forest fire.

Now when the moon peeps through the trees and paints, I have a good reason to stay awake.


Bittersweetness

The smell of alcohol and stale cigarettes, seemed to fall in the rain of this place that I felt for the very first time that I was meaningless, in the great jaws of a monster unaware of it.

The 25 meant I would see you again and in London it stopped near my house in Mile End. For the best part of the journey I was shaking, as the butterflies broke through into my chest.

And everything’s for the best, the university in sunshine that the lake reflects.

The concrete lifts me up and dares me to jump but when I looked over the edge my breath caught in my lungs, as if the best part of the thrill of it would be poetry - too fucking cheap and too insufferable to take.  

Around the corner from the LCR, waiting for the show, but the doors didn’t open.
 

And everything was bound to change I know, with your heads up high and the blood down low.

It’s another day, an English town, and another night and the stars are out. Another party’s winding down.

Her lips are warm and the grass is wet, and I lost years on uneven steps. It’s soft and warm in her bed.

It’s for the best I know because, we’re on the same page of different books, and university is for growing up.

University Of East Anglia

We settled down in a quiet town where the words fall out of every mouth, and on their lips and the buildings the letters fall out the words.

We’d gather round at my grandad’s house and steam up the glass and play cards while the honey laughter trickled down their throats.

You’re barely holding onto the edge of your seat.

She wasn’t the first that they’d lost to cancer, I was too young, I didn’t know. I didn’t know what it meant, that frightening word.

And younger still at the hospital, with the flashing lights at your bedside, I wanted to go but now I’m older I miss your laughter.

Letters Fall Out The Words

I know we're all bored of these chords and it seems so obvious they'll reach resolve. All good things must come to an end, but we'll be much older then.

And if we run into trouble with money we'll make good use of what little we've got. We'll build a home together for us, it doesn't have to look like much.

The hollow ring of silverware and porcelain in an empty home.

And we will work hard for our money, and won't be tempted by the honey pot, because honey sweet is a sickly sweet and there's plenty for all of us.

I was 13 when the markets crashed around everyone's ears.

I know we're all bored of these chords but it's the sugar sweet I like to finish on. All bad things with happy endings sound like G, A minor, C and D, and then, resolve.
