A community meeting is set to be held in Newman after complaints of disgruntled residents on social media about the high incidents of youth crime. 

John Wilmott is the pastor of the Martu Aboriginal Church in Newman. Although he has spent 12 years of his life in the town with his family, he said that it feels like the town is not a community.

A Perth radio station created a kiwi parody to play on Waitangi Day this week that offended many New Zealanders who were listening.

Eugene Williams was flicking through the radio channels in his car when he came across the program and was excited to hear what they were going to talk about on Waitangi Day.

"They played a parody, and it pulled the absolute mickey out of the Maori accent, a lot of white people like to mock our accent like 'fush and chups'".

The radio duo continued their banter with jibes at famous NZ artists like Scribe and Stan Walker.

"They said they were going to chuck Stan Walker on and I was singing away to it ....  three-quarters of the way through his song, they cut it off, and then they said 'we've been told that we have to get this song off the air because it is absolute rubbish'." 

Mr Williams contacted the radio station to make a complaint, and they apologised.

Ngarluma Filmmaker, Tyson Mowarin is joining forces with Big hART and Sutu Eats Flies to create a children's TV series that has a NEOMAD feel from Roebourne. Tyson says this project was talked about 6 years ago.

"I think that's what attracted the investors in the first place like the ABC and NITV  and then later on the Children's Television Foundation ..  (It) was the talent from the local kids.  Their unique look, the energy and the cheekiness of the kids.  Soon as people saw the Love Punks maybe 5 or 6 years ago they decided 6 years ago that this should be a TV series." 

The comic series, NEOMAD featured Roebourne children as "Love Punks" and the "Satellite Sisters".  These children were young when they worked on this project.  They're now teenagers and Director of Black Comedy, Bec Cole who will be writing the script for the new TV series says they're talented and the right fit for national television.  

"It is early stages, we're looking at writing a show with the kids for the kids, so its quite a unique way to develop a show.  The kids here in the community have done already a lot of great work with projects they have done in the past, NEOMAD for example .. we're not doing that but we're taking that kind of concept and shifting it to new territory." 

"We've got such a big indigenous film industry now, it needs new young people from the community who speak language who are interested in storytelling.  It's really developing the new young generation of talent."

The producers are looking at developing a 10-part series with episodes that are 13 to 15 minutes long.  Ms Cole is excited about some of the ideas that were discussed. 

"It's in a timeless place so it's not in the past or in the future but in its own special world."  

"These are all early ideas but basically, it's going to be boys and girls on an adventure and who are helping their community overcome dark forces."

"So we're looking at big themes that are true to the indigenous experience in this place and right across the country and things that kids see around them and kind of understand but can conquer so we're looking at preservation of country, preservation of culture and kids having each other's backs and having fun being amazing and deadly."

NEW TV SERIES TO COME OUT OF ROEBOURNE

JIGALONG YOUTH CREATE MUSIC VIDEO THAT HIGHLIGHTS THEIR COMMUNITY 

TROOTH is a WA based lyricist and artist who has been creating music videos in the Pilbara this year with youth and is now in the Gibson desert inspiring young ones to share their truth through music. 

Trooth spoke about the healing power of music and how his lyrics tell the stories of the ups and downs in his life. 

"It allowed me a form of expression.  Have you ever looked at a rice cooker when it's cooking? and sometimes the steam is so much the lid lifts up and a little bit of steam comes out. That's what writing does for me.  Instead of doing something that's destructive, being violent, I would go out and write rhymes.  It was my counsellor and my diary.  I write rhymes when i"m happy or sad. 

"I got caught up doing the wrong thing with the wrong people and I spent most of my 20s lost in addiction.  that sort of lifestyle brings a lot of pain, brings a lot of police ... being around people that don't really want the best for you.  It's quite scary," he said. 

It took him a long time to get out of the negative cycle.

"As males in society, we're told that we're meant to be strong and have everything together.  It took me ten years to crush that pride and ego and actually say look I need help in this area."

Trooth was in Jigalong this year and facilitated a songwriting and music video workshop. 

"Shout out to the Martu mob out there.  It was an amazing experience to go out to country and learn about who they are.   We got to do two songs out there.  The first one is called Jigalong my country. It's about what the Martu mob do out there in terms of hunting, talking about marbles and how hot it is out there. The second video we have done is actually a song about the ambitions in life."

"Sometimes it's hard for youth in community to really see that they have a future.  That really makes me sad.  It's a remix of the public enemy song 'Fight the Power so we changed it to Find the Power.  It talks about what we want to be in life.  Some want to be teachers, some want to be nurses."
