A recording of a paper given at the UCD Centre for War Studies in March 2014. The paper, The Irish Revolutionary Generation, was given by Professor Roy Foster. 

Prof. Roy Foster (University of Oxford) is the Carroll Professor of Irish History at Hertford College Oxford and has written widely on Irish history, society and politics in the modern period, as well as on Victorian high politics and culture; the authorised biography of Yeats; Ireland in the late 20th Century; and currently the Irish revolutionary generation of 1890-1920, subject of his 2012 Ford Lectures, and a forthcoming book (2014). He is also a well known broadcaster, cultural commentator and critic.

Professor Foster was introduced by the Director of the UCD Centre for War Studies, Professor Robert Gerwarth.

A History of Ireland in Objects
Fintan O’Toole (Journalist, Literary Editor, and Irish Times) explores how artworks and objects reveal the paradoxes and complexities of collective identity and provoke important questions of our past. O’Toole draws on his Irish Times series 'A history of Ireland in 100 Objects', in which to show how neglected or lovingly restored objects manifest the evolving representation and perceptions of Irish history and culture. 

This talk too place on 16 December 2014 at IMMA and was programmed in conjunction with IMMA exhibition Trove.

This discussion addressed the key factors that determine the objects we choose to collect for our national collections in relation to the exhibition Trove. This discussion was chaired by Catriona Crowe (Senior Archivist, Special Projects National Archives of Ireland). Panelists included Christina Kennedy (IMMA), Nigel Monaghan (National History Museum) Anne Hodge (National Gallery, Dublin) Clodagh Doyle (NMI - Country Life) and Nessa O’Connor (National Museum Ireland).

 Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., curator of northern baroque paintings, National Gallery of Art; Pieter Roelofs, curator of 17th-century paintings, Rijksmuseum; and Adriaan E. Waiboer, curator of northern European art, National Gallery of Ireland. Curators Arthur Wheelock, Pieter Roelofs, and Adriaan E. Waiboer discuss the paintings of Dutch artist Gabriel Metsu. A contemporary of Johannes Vermeer, Metsu had the ability to capture ordinary moments in 17th-century Dutch life with sensitivity and realism. Recorded on April 22, 2011, this lecture was held in conjunction with the exhibition Gabriel Metsu, 1629-1667, on view at the National Gallery of Art from April 10 to July 24, 2011

Episode 5 of a new series of oral histories, led by Donal Maguire, curator of the Gallery's ESB CSIA, documenting some of the experiences and thoughts of artists living and working through the COVID-19 emergency.

In this episode, artist Mairead O’hEocha discusses her current work and painting during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. This conversation was recorded on 22 May 2020.

Born in Dublin, Mairead O’hEocha lives and works in Dublin’s city centre. She is a painter and tends to work in series, focusing often on sets of seemingly unremarkable and disparate subjects. These allow her to explore elements of form, colour, gesture and composition, while reflecting on deeper aspects of human nature.

About Artists' Voices: Life in a Pandemic:
Oral histories are a unique record of an individual’s personal thoughts and experiences. They are a valuable source of knowledge for researchers, providing insight and connection to a person’s life and character.

The ESB Centre for the Study of Irish Art, at the National Gallery of Ireland, builds, cares for and makes available the national record of art in Ireland for public study and interpretation. Oral histories are a type of archival record and form an interesting part of the ESB CSIA’s collection. In recognizing the significant impact of COVID-19, the ESB CSIA is carrying out a series of short conversations with artists to document some of their experiences and thoughts of living and working through the pandemic.

These conversations, led by Donal Maguire, Curator of the ESB CSIA, were recorded using technology that is conveniently available to the artist. The use of commonplace technologies for this project reflects the more general and increasing significance of these platforms for everyday communication.

The ESB CSIA acknowledges the generosity of the artists for agreeing to talk about their life and work during this uncertain time.
