Eric Jones and Hao Phan talk to Hai-Dang Phan, writer, poet and professor of English at Grinnell.   Join us as we hear some of his award winning poetry and talk about the way memory factors into his work. Hai-Dang Phan is the author of the chapbook Small Wars (Convulsive Editions, 2016). His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The New Yorker, POETRY Magazine, Best American Poetry 2016, jubilat, New England Review, and elsewhere.

Second Hand Memory with Poet Hai-Dang Phan - Southeast Asia Crossroads Podcast

The sounds are compiled entirely from Hanoi-based field recordings of car horns, a hammer, a blow torch, two songs from a trip, a poetry event, and random sounds from television. The drums come from tapping the walls of my hotel room. The only exception is the bass line which is a car horn converted into midi.

Workers (Hanoi version)

[present tense] i utter the poem while sitting alone on the rock/among the reed in the early morning by the water of sông Hồng Red River entering Vietnam at Km 544, Lào Cai Province. it forms the border between Vietnam and China.  oddly enough i feel very much like being at bãi giữa of sông Hồng in Hanoi. the place (in)accidentally makes sense to me when i decided to record some of my poems, some taste of waters... i didn't plan or expect to do it. hopelessly being there, i was just heading to the hanoi station and made a long night train to be at the border in the early morning, to cry a little cry inside my body, and to hear the sound of waters.
