This weekend, Melbourne was lucky enough to witness Jeff Mills perform his highly anticipated sold out show 'Light From The Outside World' with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I was privileged to warm up for The Wizard at the afterparty and it was a great weekend for Techno.

Now in its 200th instalment, this Podcast has given voice to a diverse offering of global talents across the musical spectrum, from the democratic rhythms of zeitgeist appropriate techno and house through to more avant-garde synthwork.

This next guest has cast a large shadow over the technosphere, so large in fact, that no introduction could fully encompass the breadth of his achievements. But in brief: Ben Klock is a titan whose formative years were spent playing marathon mixes to the crowds at Berlin’s (then recently opened) Berghain. Off the back of his endurance sets and the club’s success he became a household name whose influence grew to be felt across the world, with a body of work that includes appearances at an exhaustive list of clubs and festivals, a number of hot releases on Ostgut Ton and an equally respected self-run label (Klockworks) to boot. On this second imprint, his own productions have repeatedly seen the light of day, alongside those from the likes of DVS1, Sterac, Stef Mendesidis and younger talents like Temudo and Vil & Cravo. The sound, ubiquitous as it is, will be familiar to anyone involved in the world of electronic music and there’s good reason for that: Klock’s deep and percussive work and ability to pull from a wide range of influences have earmarked him as a unique agent for the techno cause. Atmospheric and delivered with hammering force, Klock’s refined palette for rhythms is as relevant now as ever. Takumi Inamoto’s one of two minds behind Transcendence (the other fellow beat hawker DJ Maria), the Kanto region’s highest proposal for community-oriented music nights. It’s a rave collective that’s proven a trusty channel for his brand of squelchy, Goa-infused trance, profound and ritualistic techno with a direct line to the limbic brain. An expansive sound that has evolved from a keen affinity with Japanese rave culture and out of his steadily growing collection of CDs and records. This master selector deals in skittish rhythms and ominously brewing atmospherics, and walks a hazy path through the twilight realm that precipitates a kind of reverence that’s often rare. From his native land to KUNE Festival and Amsterdam's Garage Noord, these prolific beats are exporting a style palpably his and putting his sigil on the ascendant. Bassiani Podcast 238 is his prototypical sound, a throbbing mass of beats that morphs larger in the direction of unmapped worlds, a two-hour studio mix that unapologetically pulls you towards its slick and hazy centre.

At the helm of her own record label, Monday Off, Mary puts in the same precision and effort she dishes out through all of her vinyl-only DJ sets. Stripped-back and highly cerebral, her style sits at the junction of heavily dubbed-out psychedelia, liquid abstraction and post-industrialism, and this mix doesn’t differ. Enter Yuzovskaya’s mazy new vinyl exclusive mix with crumbs of bread in your pocket and some red thread, for we’re yet to know where the labyrinth ends. But does it even have an end?

Mark Peeters’ self-styled persona Caim exudes good vibes, an aura of love and is a guaranteed good night out. He’s a Dutch producer and jockey with pep in his step, bouncing from club to club, continent to continent, never taking himself too seriously, simply relaying sounds as they come and giving his crowds the fun they came for. Watch him play and there might just be one question left to answer, whether it’s him or those on the other side of his set-up enjoying themselves more. Years into his musical project he’s got the stamina of a newly minted selector, a ‘knob-twitching, crate digging’ beat enthusiast whose sets twist and turn from techno to trance to breakbeat to house. Alongside a residency at Amsterdam’s Breakfast Club and at the helm of his city’s Mood parties, he also runs Lonely Planet Records, a label on which his own EP is set for release on November 15th. The Medusa Hunter is set to be a futuristic, Goa-inspired record where the myths of the past and the bright lights of future converge. Little doubt it’s going to be a banger. Bassiani Podcast 243 brings his stream of references together in a groovy mash up that gently rises and falls, three hours and thirteen minutes of sweet-toothed electronic bliss, a set recorded live during his performance on the Horoom floor back in September.

Irakli Kiziria is a much lauded cultural force in his chosen home Berlin. For over a decade, the Georgian transplant has been crafting a space somewhere between belligerent rhythm and ambient dreamscape with a growing number of influential projects to his name. His 10am-10pm STAUB parties offering legendary daytime gathering soundtracked by an incognito list of techno’s finest, and earlier collaboration in the form of I/Y also setting forth a voice and imprint to publish the work of consonant peers. More recently, his home-listening outlet Intergalactic Research Institute For Sound has funeled his energies towards a “dreamy, more abstract, 'intergalactic' music”. And it’s from this realm that this next Zenaari instalment emerges: a tripped-out reverie that walks his more delicate line. Zenaari Mix 016 weaves together gently waltzing piano interludes with the chiming of bells, lullaby warps with the analogue crackle of a vintage speaker and the confident strumming of a lute. Irakli given free-hand to explore his space in heavens and this is the result, an intimate augur for a promising future and 80-minute (all vinyl) podcast hued with the longing and strange.

Zenaari Mix 016 - Irakli

Psyk is a key player in Spanish techno, an acclaimed talent with firm emphasis on deep, repetitive loops. He has become synonymous with high-quality, trippy and smart as a tack rhythms. For the last two decades since he started out on Madrid’s clandestine rave beat, he’s developed and advanced a sound to near perfection: raw and technically agile, pelagic echoes from the abyss that have shifted with their changing times. 2011 saw him launch the widely renowned Non Series, a platform releasing the work of similar vein artists like DJ Nobu, Architectural, Neel, Nastia Reigel, Tauceti, Blawan, Luigi Tozzi, Function and Rrose, generating buzz and ardent following. His own releases on labels like Mote Evolver, Semantica and Tresor, intermittent forays on his own label under the alias Maan, as well as his co-project Second Skin (est. 2022) alongside fellow Madrileño Oscar Mulero have been slowly gaining traction in a contemporary music landscape replete with talent. Though the rate of productions is decelerating his touring schedule marches forward at full tilt, adding recent Bassiani dates to those at a list of must-play venues like Fabric, Berghain, Fuse, Tresor and Amsterdam’s shuttered DeSchool. His expert drones and algorithmic beat patterns are in a process of continuing evolution and whatever comes next is sure to be even better than his already outstanding catalogue of work. Bassiani Podcast 258 is an 80-minute expedition into a murky world of Psyk’s design, sweeping and purist techno from this heavyweight selector.
