Tom B is a DJ and collector of fine music with a deep affection for the humble 7 inch vinyl record.

In 2019 he and long time friend East Larry started up Jive Turkey - a party that celebrates the little records. 'We're big advocates of the multi genre, open-format approach to DJing and you can hear this coming through strongly at each of our nights.' Jive Turkey happens on the last Friday of every odd-numbered month at Havana bar in Wellington.

'Huge thanks to the NiceUp crew for inviting me to submit a mix, it's an honour to be asked to contribute, but also it has inspired me to reach into the dusty corners of my collection and pull out some music that I don't really get to play out often.

The mix takes in roots, dub, trip hop, hip hop, dancehall and a couple of in-betweeners - I really hope you all enjoy!'

Little Records with Big Sound - Tom B Mix for NiceUp

Kia ora Nice Up Whanau,

I’ve been DJing for over 30 years, starting out in the early 90s as a box boy for the Mighty Axis Sound System.  It was a hard introduction to sound system culture in the North of England and I eventually became a selector and DJ.

My addiction to vinyl and DJing became so great that I opened my own record shop, Proper Records. We also ran a couple of drum and bass labels, ‘Birth’ and ‘Home Grown’ which pumped out about 25 vinyl releases.

Aotearoa and Northland have been home for over 16 years now. I’m currently the resident DJ for Jacman Entertainment, if you’ve been to a reggae show up North, I’m the fellow warming up the crowd for the big names.

My SoundCloud page is bursting with reggae and most of its sub genres. There are dedicated artist mixes, Studio One sets and SoundCloud’s most listened to, King Tubby mix.

Live DJ sets are always strictly vinyl only, all killers with no fillers, dancefloor reggae mixed and played proper.
