NiceUp Mix Series 2019

A heavyweight music collector, record dealer, promoter, tour manager and DJ, Gwaan Gal has been a part of the New Zealand, Australian and Canadian music industry for over a decade. In New Zealand, she founded the pioneering dancehall club night 'Buss It Up' and has played on top radio stations and festivals.  She runs Simmer Down Productions in Melbourne.

From dancehall, jungle, hip hop to house and disco sets, her eclectic rhythm driven sounds are destined to keep the dancefloor full. Having produced music for Jamaican artists and performed alongside global acts, she is a staple in providing good vibes.

DJ Vadim Mix For NiceUp

Ali T began running sound systems in Scotland over 10 years ago. Always focused on reggae and bass music, he was a regular at the Mungo's Hi Fi 'Walk and Skank’ night in Glasgow and on the festival circuit.
 
Ali then moved to New Zealand and built Wakamana Sound System alongside musical collaborator, Cai. In the last few years he has been pushing Wakamana forward, running sessions across the South Island, hosting a bi-weekly radio show on Drop FM and playing various venues and festivals as DJ Wakamana.

Ali says, “I wanted this mix to represent sound system culture in New Zealand, so I decided to roll straight dubplates. I want to big up all artists that contributed and NiceUp for the opportunity. Run it!"

Wakamana Sound System Mix for NiceUp

Livity’s obsession with reggae music began when he moved to Dunedin to begin a Fine Arts degree. He started attending reggae dancehall nights at Bath Street, saying ‘I was that annoying kid asking the DJs for track names’.

Soon after this his vinyl addiction began. He was invited by General Dread from Renegade Sound System to present a show on Radio One. Not long after he started playing at Bath Street’s weekly reggae nights.

In 2006 Livity supported Luciano and met Messenjah from Reality Chant Productions backstage, the day before moving back to Christchurch. This lead to joining Messenjah and Nazarite on the Dubwize show on a regular basis and doing gigs as a crew. He has now been running the show solo for 6 years.

He is a regular fixture on Bass Factory and Chief Remedy Sound Systems, has supported many internationals and played countless festivals and local gigs.

Livity loves all reggae from militant Rasta roots to the slackest dancehall.

He says, 'I wanted to create a mix that reflects the diversity of reggae music that I love. I find mixtapes hard as there are so many songs I want to squeeze in, so I used tunes that I've played in recent DJ sets and tried to create something with flow while ripping through some different styles. Respect to all crew nationwide pushing the sound in their own ways, I hope you enjoy the mix'.

Livity Mix for NiceUp

"In 1972 I was 16 years old, and although I was still at school I had two paper rounds and a Saturday job which provided money for going out, clothes, and most importantly, records.

While all but a couple of friends had unceremoniously ditched reggae as their music of choice I had already made the step up from buying UK releases on Trojan and Pama’s labels to buying ‘pre-release’, 7” 45 rpm records that were freshly imported from Jamaica. The latest sounds with wildly exotic label designs or mysterious, rubber stamped white labels.

Sometimes these tunes would take months to be released over here, and now and again there would be a record which didn’t get released at all, adding to the value – and the exclusivity – of the copy I was lucky enough to own.

We all have our own ideas about ‘the best year for reggae’, and of course it’s very subjective, but I’ve always looked back and seen 1972 as a very special year, not just because it was an important part of my youth, but also for the sheer quality of the music. Reggae was changing, the deejays were becoming even more prominent, the lyrics were getting more socially conscious and exhilarating dub mixes were starting to take over from the rather plain B-side ‘versions’. This was the sound of the future!"
