NiceUp Mix Series 2015

Earthlink Sound are one of Australasia's top crews, formed in Perth in 2005 by original members Drummie Wotton, and Foodus from Jamaica. Over time the crew has evolved and included Sheriff Lindo, Simmo T, Choppa Crucial, Tatty Reps and Kritical. After returning to his native island, Foodus formed an Earthlinks Jamaican crew, and still plays to this day around the St Mary region. 
 
Earthlink run one of Australia’s longest running monthly dances, Fisherman Style, which began almost 9 years ago in 2006. Fisherman’s has showcased the very best of local, Australian and international DJs and performers and is always full of vibes.
 
The crew today consist of Drummie and Kritical in the mix, and the dub master, Sheriff Lindo, on live dub duties and effects, with guest appearances from Simmo T and Choppa Crucial.

Earthlink Sound Mix for NiceUp

This selection represents one of my favourite phases of Reggae, the Rockers (Steppas, Roots Reggae if you like)of the mid-to-late-70s. The heavy basslines, rocking double-time drum patterns and percussion enthralled me at the time as they still do now. 

These are all original 7'' 45's except for Peter Austin's 'The Ghetto', which is a recent re-issue, but as it's from the same period of time, fits perfectly! I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did compiling this selection of AUTHENTIC ROOTS ROCK REGGAE!

Hawk I is a central part of the NiceUp crew. His works have included national and international tour promotion, music reviews, interviews, film screenings and radio. He has deejayed around Aotearoa, Melbourne and Europe, bringing high energy and vibes to all his sets.

Adrians Wall - Word Sound & Power Mixtape - Part 3: Power

UK crew, Roots Factory, bring you an essential mix of some of their favourite records, unreleased gems, and home-made heavyweight dubplates and specials.

Since 2007, Roots Factory have been making waves on the European circuit, headlining club nights and festivals all over. They have also been busy in the studio releasing two 12" records, as well as a very limited series of dubplates cut especially for sound systems.

Their selection is a mix of old and new, never forgetting the pioneers who helped shape the sound, while making forward-thinking music with a modern feel.

Roots Factory Mix For NiceUp

Bent Backs Sound was founded in 2009 in Rennes, France. Passionate about the 80s era of reggae, the crew collect records, cut original dub plates, and promote artists and sessions. 

In 2011, Bent Backs founder, Lo, decided to move forward and produce his own records. Bent Backs is now a Brooklyn-based label working with artists in New-York and riddim makers from Rennes. 

Their releases reflect an intention to promote upcoming artists, such as Jay Spaker and S'Kaya, along with recording Jamaican veterans like Johnny Osbourne, Echo Minott, King Kong and Ranking Joe.

Bent Backs Sound Mix For NiceUp

Dun Di Place Vol.3 is the third in a series of strictly dancehall mixes by DJ Grafta, that represent the main focus of his output as a selector, Jamaican street music.

Originally hailing from the Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand, Grafta has played a crucial part in developing the Auckland and New Zealand bashment scenes, and now resides in Vancouver, BC.

Grafta X NiceUp present Dun Di Place Vol.3

The Inner West Reggae Disco Machine is a sound system from the Inner West suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The crew, consisting of Rik Sonic, Stevie Dub and Gonz, are a bunch of reggae addicts with a passion for all things reggae from Ska and Calypso to Dancehall and Digi-killers and everything in between. 

The sound system  itself was inspired by  Heartical Hi Fi from Melbourne and the legendary Firehouse parties of the 90s, but most importantly the lack of a sound in Sydney.  

The  crew say "We like to run a dance with MCs  over a natural progression of rocksteady, roots, to 80s, to dancehall and beyond.  And that is exactly what you will find in this mix. There is homage to the past  and respect to the new. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it. Bless."

Papa Steve has run Downbeat Melody Sound in Bristol UK, for the last ten years. His passion for reggae developed in the 70s when he began going to blues dances in South London and built his first sound, Sir Messenger. For awhile Steve lost contact with reggae, then some years later around ’91 his interest was rekindled and he has been hooked ever since.

He has been deejaying for over 20 years and plays across the UK regularly, including collaboration sessions with Frankie Dread from Roots Factory. He also ran a much loved Saturday morning radio show on Passion Radio Bristol.

Steve says ‘When you get a feeling for reggae music you have to go out with the old seven inch discs and express yourself through the music, it’s what I do, I can’t help myself!’.

Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, Conviction Roots began with an interest in Asian Underground and Drum n Bass, which naturally led him to Reggae. 

The Roots Foundation sessions in Wellington left a lasting impression on him and sowed the seed for what was to come. After moving to the UK and hearing Reggae played on a heavyweight sound system for the first time, it became his main musical focus.

A lover of all styles from Ska through to Steppas, with a first love of 70s Roots from the golden era, Conviction Roots believes there is room for everyone in Reggae.
