Sean Pierce debuts on Mannequin Records with an intense dark / techno modular synth 6 tracks EP. 

Currently operating out of Portland, Oregon, Sean is one half of ASSS, who put out two acclaimed singles on Mannequin Records parent label Haunted Air Records. 

One of the most fascinating elements of Sean's artistic principle is his absolute lack of propriety over his artistic work, which is a beautiful and radical approach. He encourages people to check out his set-up at shows to see what he's concocted. A performance is enjoyable in part because he's able to share information, for he believes a collective pool of idea sharing and advancements into how people think and what they're doing is "really important for the creative community.

Sean is interested in the rearranging of elements within a performance: taking sounds that he or someone else has made and sending them through his particular process. Specific categorization is not applicable to his sound projects, but he says there is something industrial about it, a metallic quality that is, of late, satisfying. The most appropriate articulation of his music might be: the percussive use of synthesizers.

Debut release of hi-res, bare bones hardware techno from Melbourne-based synthesis explorer Nina Buchanan. Parallel to creating woozy extended synth pop jams in duo Video Ezy (Paradise Daily) as well as pushing dynamic textural noise forms into unique shapes in UTI (duo with Maya Kjellstrand of Bleach Boys, Leopard Leg), Buchanan has arrived at a precision nexus of brutalist techno and a truly uplifting style of ecstatic melodic synth riffage. Conjuring thick atmospheres and tonalities with almost blu-ray levels of vibrancy is perhaps in essence attributable to the simplicity of her chosen elements; 1 synth, 1 drum machine - the rest is purely incendiary sparks, resonating brightly in the spaces in between. “MOI” is the fearless new full length album by artist and musician Steven Warwick. The record signals a more upbeat reprise following the previous, reflective release “Nadir”. “MOI”, the first physical release under his own name ( having previously recorded under the Heatsick monicker), is a journey considering interior worlds and personal architecture, as found in early spiritual narratives. Recorded in Berlin, the FUGA residency space in Zaragoza and and on location in New York, Warwick’s sonic vocabulary is further expanded with intense frenetic rhythms, prismatic melodies and resonant vocals.

Like the dopamine rush of contemporary life, “MOI” is a sonic roller coaster with a scream -if-you-wanna-go-faster urgency ; “Open Fire Hydrant” bursts out like a pressure valve spiralling onto the dancefloor, while Kaleidoscope offers cheeky anecdotes as told on a ride home soundtracked by a garage beat.
MOI is a spectrum both emotionally and musically, embedded with an underlying spirituality wrestling with existential dread, as witnessed in “Over There”, “Salvation”, “Kind of Blue” or the icy digital pulse of “Cold Light of Day”. “Danke” featuring guest vocals from visual artist Josephine Pryde offers a slightly gothic feel, albeit of the architectural variety, while the purgatorial transmissions of “Consolatio”, bring a moment of respite. “Rush” is a sensuous percussive workout before concluding on the rampaging seductive house track “Silhouette”.

Years ago I read an interview with György Ligeti where he spoke about the overused European tuning system and how he tried to escape it. He mentioned a few ethnomusicologists whose recordings were primary inspirations for his work. One of the names was Hugo Zemp and I immediately delved into his unbelievable recordings collected on the Southern part of Malaita island around the year 1970.

The music of the 'are'are people back then was fragile and heartwarming, communal and sublimely celebratory. Ever since I simply haven't been able to escape the sounding of their panpipe ensembles. At the same time I feel really sad that - like so many plant and wildlife species - small local cultures are also disappearing at an alarming rate, theirs included. My whole research and artistic output can be seen as a dedication to these people of disappearing local cultures.

As a first step I recorded "Proto Equiheptatonic Music" last year where I used the theoretical equiheptatonic tuning system which is a close approximation of their musical DNA. Listen: bit.ly/2Sb6JsQ

As I studied more and more - thanks to the scientific papers of Mr. Zemp - I could see the structures in finer details and as a consequence I could record "Pseudo Equiheptatonic Music" where I was using the exact tuning system of their recorded panpipe ensembles - but in a completely different context and vision. So I cannot emphasize enough that these musics cannot be considered as representations of their musical culture in any ways, rather an uninterrupted continuation of the ever-expanding universe of Gosheven's ceaseless dreaming.
