August 2013... Lyrical devastation: Gruff, ruff and twice as tough; Blackout’s guttural sentiments are delivered straight from the soul with raw power and pure Jamaican heritage.

In the past the traditional reggae MC has worked with the likes of Courtney Pine, Sean Paul, Barrington Levy, Big Youth, Julian Marley, Buju Banton and many more. A consistency on Bristol’s leading jungle boutique since their earliest releases, here we find him teaming up with key members of the Run Tingz family for four incredible slabs of contemporary jungle drum & bass.

First up, ‘No Gangster Way’. A tag-team tear-up, Run Tingz Cru and Serial Killaz go toe-to-toe, laying down a broken-glass soundtrack of fat sines, pummelling kicks and brash dramatic synth horns while J.A extolls the virtues of a crime-free life. Rolling and punching in equal measure, it’s a bold statement of intent to ignite the EP.

‘Cross Roads’ follows. An interesting deviation on the classic Run Tingz style, the jump up groove is based on an elephantine bass stomp. Walloping with ‘heads-down’ one-note punches and a savage series of breakbeats, it’s the perfect bed for Blackout to philosophise about the endless choices we make each day and how they affect the rest of our lives.

New signing Ricky Tuff steps up for the penultimate jam ‘Close To Me’… Swaggering with a crisp synth-shot skank flex, Ricky’s licks are spacious enough for both Blackout and Blaze to bounce off each other with panache. As the subs bubble and the undulating beats roll with fire Blackout bigs up the girl dem while Blaze showcases some crazy double-time spittage.

It’s down to J.Man to close the show. And he does so with explosive results; mammoth warbling jungle bass, precision engineered breakbeats and classical amen art on the fills, J.Man’s recipe accentuates Blackout’s darkest motifs. With emphatic chants on the chorus and strident strings blended deep into the tearing texture it’s an instant dancefloor call to action you’ll want to reload again and again.

It’s not often you see a seasoned veteran of the scene release a debut solo EP a quarter of a century into their career as an artist, but in this case Aries’ was certainly worth the wait. Having released material on practically every Jungle label worth their salt, including Congo Natty, Dread, V Recordings, Run Tingz Recordings & Chopstick Dubplate - it is Bristol’s Ramajam Recordings that have finally thrown down the gauntlet on what is Birmingham’s finest’s most captivating project to date, ‘Year Of The Goat EP’.

The Chopstick co-owner has employed a solid sound across this project that really does embody the heart and soul of this music in 2015; 4 original tracks plus an instrumental that you expect to stand the test of time, in a ruthless scene where these days protracted shelf life is somewhat of a myth.

‘Year Of The Goat EP’ pays homage to a modern-purist-Jungle sound that is hard to come by in an age of sample pack jump up - this is really something Aries has done with great aplomb over the years.

'Dancehall Ruler' features the energy and vocal talents of Blackout JA, delivering a catchy number that Aries produced using only played in instruments, no samples whatsoever.

'Vicious' takes you back to a euphoric level with an addictive vocal, rugged drums and a driving bassline.

'I Need You' takes a similar stance, riding along the euphoric journey with up to date production techniques and dancefloor destroying vibe.

'Ways Of The Underground' takes you all the way back to the days of United States Of Drum and Bass, the mid 90's flow and toxic bass truly show his understanding of this music.

The EP also features a bonus track in the form of an instrumental version of 'Dancehall Ruler'.

RASSTERLIN, head honcho behind the mighty Asbo imprint comes in hard and takes you on a journey that swings and sways through dark atmospherics, reggae skanks and a vocal that oozes dancehall lava. Definitely one for the “heads”. Next comes the unmistakable sounds of SUBCRIMINAL, fresh from his recent “Raised In The Hood” EP delivering a real bouncing dancefloor smasher with a cheeky steppa style beat and some cool reggae vocals reminiscent of the Clashes “Armageddon Time”. It's simply impossible not to jump around when the bassline drops. GALVATRON’s “Bam Bada” finally sees the light of day after a year of slaying down the dance on dub. Utilising his trademark heavily chopped up amen breaks and a dark rumbling reese bass, combined with that mesmerising female vocal, this tune goes off and is immense fun to mix with! After appearing on two Welcome To The Jungle albums, Jungle Cakes are excited to welcome Karlixx on his full, two track debut single. Following hot on the heels of 2018’s ‘Influence’ album, Dope Ammo invites some of his close friends to paint a fresh coat of bass on the first selection of remixes. These updates come from some big names too with the initial batch presented by Ed Solo, Benny Page, Kleu and none other than the man himself.

‘Babylon Falling’ featuring Taiwan MC was always full of summertime vibes and fresh for 2019, Ed Solo takes that feel good factor and ramps up the dial to 11. A perfect example of how to add trademark techniques without complicating the original direction.

Kleu brings forth a re-edit of ‘Old Times’ featuring the vocal talents of Martin Carr and this time around, a slab of sinister bass notes that totally mix the feel of the original into something completely different. It works and it’s certainly going to take you by surprise!

Original bad man Benny Page takes control of ‘Saturday’ in the only style and fashion you would expect from this veteran producer. Sticking with the theme of commercial but credible, this one is certainly aimed at both radio airplay and ram jammed underground dancefloors alike. Lighters at the ready..

Dope Ammo finishes off the first batch of the remixes with ‘Repent’. Whilst the original was stripped back to 120bpm, this one certainly takes it up a notch by going through the grand old time stretching box of tricks a few times. An impressive take on what was something a bit different from 2018 album. Infectious vocals and hard bassline lead. No worries inna dance here!
