Niche Crush - Every Text Is Like A Little Letter EP

Niche Crush are Ollie & Loz, a Manc and a Scouser, now living by the sea in Margate. They formed in late 2021 after drinking too many bottles of orange WKD and deciding it would be a good idea to start a band and play a gig at a spoken word event in Merthyr Tydfil, in Wales. We don’t know why or how this was allowed to happen but it did, the gig went well and they got asked back to do another one! They quite like Merthyr Tydfil and the people of Merthyr Tydfil seemed to like them too. Buoyed on by these rather successful, but rather ill advised gigs (Merthyr Tydfil is a long, long way from Margate), they’ve since been busy sat in a bedroom in Margate drinking more orange WKD, writing and recording and this summer saw them play a whole host of gigs outside of Wales including London, Manchester and numerous shows in Margate.

They have about 48 songs so far, and yes, they are all named after people. People they love, people they hate, some are real and some are fake. It’s probably a bad idea to start a new band with such a silly concept but hey, why not?

Every Text Is A Little Letter is a collection of 3 of those songs and is the band’s first offering to the world after much procrastination. All recorded in their bedroom and we think it sounds boss!

Simon is about a chap called Simon and is based on teenage lyrics found in the loft. Romeo is named after Romeo Stodart off of the Magic Numbers but has nothing to do with him, they just liked the name. Gareth is actually about their friend Gareth, he’s actually a lovely chap and frankly they’re really worried about him ever hearing it…

What does the future hold for Niche Crush? We’re guessing 2024 will see more more orange WKD drunk, more songs written, recorded and released. They're busy booking more gigs atm and finishing up the mixes of EP2 and EP3!

Oh and ideally they’d like someone to like them, give them gigs, play them on radio and then get a massive fuck off (or even a teeny weeny) record deal, failing that some free bottles of orange WKD would be nice…

Niche Crush are Ollie & Loz, one from Blackpool, one from Liverpool, now living by the sea in Margate, which isn’t a pool, it’s a gate. They formed in late 2021 after drinking too many bottles of orange WKD and deciding it would be a good idea to start a band and play a gig at a spoken word event in Merthyr Tydfil, in Wales. Since that rather bizarre choice of first gig, the band have been playing their socks off where/whenever they can. They’ve also been busy writing and recording a bunch of songs in their bedroom; songs that are all named after people: people they like, people they hate, ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriends or people with names they just think sound funny.

‘Jeff’ is a song about a made up person and is the follow up to their debut EP, ‘Every Text Is Like A Little Letter’. The EP got some great reviews and some blummin’ excellent airplay from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Radio X and Amazing Radio. Obviously, they would be made up if the same thing (or more) happened for ‘Jeff’ but who knows… (Guess that’s up to you. No pressure).

As Lauren says: “Jeff is not made up, he’s amalgamation of everyone I’ve ever dreamed off. This is a song about making up a version of a person that isn’t really them. About realising you’re in a relationship with someone who doesn’t really exist and then starting to wonder if they’ve done the same with you.  It’s also about liking a certain song that you thought represented you both but it really didn’t represent either of you. (180 points if you can work out the song).” 

It’s also about limerence, don’t worry we had to look it up too.

There’s loads songs to come, so many songs, more songs than you can stand, with verses, choruses and middle 8 breaks. Last count they have more than 50. And so, in addition to this full release, the band will also be dropping a new track every Monday on their Soundcloud page to download for free, until they get bored / run out of songs. 

So yeah. Niche Crush. That’s them. Two Hollyoaks Punks from Margate, drunk on orange WKD, falling down a flight of stairs after recording in their bedroom. They’re boss. They’re your new Niche Crush.

Jeff

Niche Crush have been busy.

After releasing their second single 'Jeff' in April they got bored and drunk and decided to start releasing a song every week via their Soundcloud / Bandcamp pages.

These aren't proper singles, that would be daft, these are just some of the 50+ songs they've been working on in their bedroom over the last year or so, and they thought, 'fuck it' - might as well get them out there.

So far they have been doing this for 14 (fourteen!) weeks. They're going to keep releasing a song a week until Christmas. And yeah, they're all named after people, and yeah, they have a Christmas song. Idiots.

Alan is probably their nicest song. It's a love letter to Alan Shearer and the writer Harriet Gibsone. Niche. If you haven't heard of Harriet Gibsone read her book 'Is This OK?', its boss. If you haven't heard of Alan Shearer then please don't listen to this song.

There is a proper single on its way soon. It's called Adrian and is angry and noisy.

In the meantime just enjoy Alan.

I don't know what that is, by any means, but it's worth a wonder. (I guess, I've also been listening to a lot of Bruce Springsteen.)

This one's not positive, per se, but it's about a good person, not a bad one (self included), for a change. If there'd ever been a 'battle', she didn't lose, she won, because the world wasn't good enough for her. Her name was Andrea but you'll hear why the song's called Leigh. And thus, here's a picture of Leigh Brackett, the Queen of Space Opera,  because the world wasn't good enough for her either.

So on October 16 th it’s a very special person’s very special birthday and Niche Crush decided to make him a
little present. God knows if he’ll like it, they’ve kept the receipt just in case…
So yeah, it’s a song for the legend that is Steve Lamacq. Is it about Steve? Kinda, kinda not. As Loz from the
band says:
“It&#39;s about meeting someone who you feel like was always there, as though you grew up together. And now
you&#39;ll never have to grow up because there&#39;s someone the same, who&#39;s still excited about the same things they
were in the 90&#39;s and who still takes Lammo&#39;s word as gospel. A love letter to both!”
