Atlanta originals, Black Lips join forces with independent record label Fire Records revealing first single ‘Odelia’ with a new album out early 2020 in collaboration with Vice. Now twenty years into their career the exuberant quintet are touring across the US before heading to Europe for an extensive tour this November. 

A powerhouse of angst wrapped in traditional melodies, it’s a wild rumble fusing their musical journey from garage rock, punk and psychedelia into a mind-blowing hybrid of cosmic broken country, fragmented Paisley Pop and heart-on-the-sleeve back porch reportage, all delivered with vengeance in their eyes.

Returning to their roots, Black Lips headed into Laurel Canyon’s newly reopened legendary Valentine Recording Studios recording studio, and with the help of engineer and co-producer, Nicolas Jodoin, they recorded direct to 2" tape.

New single ‘Odelia’ will be available from 17th October with news of their ninth studio album to be revealed imminently.

WIL: I've loved '3AM' since 2015 when Danny first put it on Dropbox. '3AM' is about persistence: we've come into "realer" jobs, families have gotten more complicated, & we're still finding time to write music in the nooks & crannies of our life. '3AM' is about that. 

DANNY: '3AM' is about obstacles & having friends you trust to help carry that weight. Working together, late at night even, to reach the goal.

Combining a distinctive fusion of originality and homage, 22-year-old Phil Madeley’s music is born of equal parts disdain and anger for the current state of play. Wrapped up in his laid-back, Neil Young meets Jamie T, grit-edged soft rock, are pressing and serious issues of present-day alienation, loneliness and mistrust. With the ability to carry a refined maturity, as well as charming throwaway youthful aphorisms, his voice serves as the perfect vehicle for such reflections – resulting in songs that want to offer as much refuge as they do commentary.

Having cut his teeth as a solo performer, Madeley has crafted a commanding live act that is captivating and exciting, drawing comparisons with Jarvis Cocker and Mick Jagger. Performances at 2019’s Dot to Dot festival and headlines at The Waiting Room and The Sunflower Lounge (amongst a range of supports) have led to live shows defined by clout and purpose.

The early demos Phil recorded at home on his Tascam four-track tape machine served to document the growing maturity and control in his voice and his songwriting. Off the back of recording sessions at RAK studios in London, his long-awaited debut single ‘Same Skies’ is released via Nice Swan Records on October 11th 2019.

Founded by New York City-based musician Joe Stevens in 2017, Peel Dream Magazine released their debut album, Modern Meta Physic, on the much loved and venerable American independent label Slumberland Records the following year, 2018.

Driven by a DIY aesthetic and initially very much a ‘home recording project’, their debut recalled the likes of Yo La Tengo and Unrest and harkened back to the early 1990s, when The Velvet Underground resurged as an inspiration to a new set of bands wielding synthesizers and off-set guitars.

Having only played their debut show in January 2018 the Up and Up EP, and forthcoming second album, reflects Peel Dream Magazine’s gestation beyond the bedroom delivering something more dynamic than Modern Meta Physic reflecting their new status as a 4-piece band. Recorded in part at a studio on the northern tip of Greenpoint near Queens, the tracks feature vocals from sometimes-band-member, collaborator, and friend Jo-Anne Hyun.

While channelling some of the droney, kraut-y repetitiveness of their debut album, the tracks however hide less behind a hazy veneer possessing a hitherto to unheard sense of immediacy which draw easy comparison with the likes of Stereolab or Broadcast.

Talking about the inspiration for the EP, Stevens said:

"Thematically, these songs are plucked from a big batch of material that deals with the ethics of popular music. I wanted to talk about the current popular music scene through the eyes of Bertolt Brecht, who warned that audiences become susceptible to mind-control when they take popular art at face value. The entire EP is like a little Brechtian play. Up and Up is literally about feeling manipulated by the theatre of crap art. It's about second-guessing the highs and lows you're told to feel. Our heartstrings can be pulled by anyone who really knows what they're doing, and its not a very nice feeling when you suspect that you're being taken advantage of. Oppressive political regimes ban free-thinking art because they don't want citizens to flex their brain muscles and question the status quo. In the song, I'm inserting myself between Brecht and his nemesis, Aristotle. I want to stand up for audiences everywhere, myself included."

It’s been a few short months since Badge Époque Ensemble released their self titled debut, an ambiguous collection of woozy, narcotized funk. And yet already we have Nature, Man & Woman - a simmering new platter containing 3 songs, producing 26 minutes of dank flute-oriented atmosphere. 

The disco-sleeved 12” EP provides a revealing glimpse of a musically omnivorous approach. On Badge Theme we find the group upping the ante of the sound of their debut, unspooling 14 minutes of sensual Ike Hayes indebted oomph, sure to thrill future generations of loop diggers (cut live off the floor no less!). 


The A side contains 2 songs, which seem to hint at diverging future directions this eclectic combo might take moving forward. Opener “Zealous Child” comes as something of a sequel to the debut LP’s sole vocal featuring track “Undressed In Solitude”. This go round BÉE have teamed up with Toronto singer Dorothea Paas to ruminate on notions of spiritual wisdom overtop a progressive and climactically bombastic homebrew. Title track “Nature, Man & Woman” closes out the side with 6 ominous minutes of mysterious provenance. Somewhere between a live performance and a collaged tapestry, the group make more explicit than ever before their affinity for beat-centric loop music. Sounding like Lonnie Liston Smith gone trip-hop for a broadcast prohibited episode of Law & Order, BÉE posit themselves here as amongst the moodiest of contemporary instrumental collectives. Little wonder that library music enthusiasts around the world have made emphatic note of the Ensemble.

The A side “Hypnosis” is an up number from The Hive that catches the listener from the first notes of Paul’s guitar. A good vibe tune inspired by the price you pay to stay out late at night and enjoy your life knowing you have work in the morning. Homer and Paul once again play up the fruitful relationship of oxpecker and rhino with Steinweiss’ infamous in the pocket drumming that Spring’s vocals float over. Harp and synth flourishes pepper the arrangement and the uber-catchy chorus makes this one a staple in their live set.
