This is Montaigne Avenue, where the soul will go to die
In slender gilded shells all the lesser fortunes lie
Through the books and songs, he knew many a tale
But he never had the courage to translate it to himself

It was a long time coming
When the forces looked to meet
He gave no thought to treat

Cause he was born in the purple on the Fourth of July
With the guns a ’blazing all across the sky
And yet he’ll never know the face of resistance until the day he dies 

There are many dead, and with each exhausts a name
But they all belong to him, as sanctions to his claim
Now that Carthage burns to the ash it swept before
The dust will disperse the truth in a Gordian lore

In the wasteland, the most fecund seeds will hitchhike the Harmattan
And leave a desert behind with never a thought to the winds that kick the sand
And everybody hopes that the trailing tides are setting their sights ahead
But little do they know that the partitioning blue has left a burning thirst for red

Everybody knows, but nobody cares
Where the mind goes, how the soul fares

Left and leaving for the morrow
With not a hope I care to borrow
Not a thread I'd interweave
We all need something to believe

Everybody goes to find a thrill in the night, the body is a dark machine
Far away from all the boring, that's what keep our minds at ease
And everybody can find a jelly-filled crown, and this old man is wearing his above

Everybody says, everybody knows, everybody cares
Where will I go, how will I share?

In the solitude of midnight, her stride is proudly worn
But falls upon a saunter in the contrast of the morn
And like verses from the bible, we use her as we will
A phrase that reconciles both the pleasant and the shrill
So in cold effectuation she must brave the sea alone
Until it pierces down into her bone
But it’s as true as the moon
It’s as true as the moon
When they say the dark shall come too soon

Now city finds horizon, and closer as it meets
Intoxicating scents replace the salinizing seas
And she steps a cautious foot down upon her newest home
To tether a momentum unaccustomed to her own
But the tragic and the certain are all one and the same
And right down to the person and the name
So it’s as true as the moon
It’s as true as the moon

They’ve spent so many years now in their debt
One hand is reaching out, the other stays set
No promise of the future could survive
While heavies of the past still played in their minds

But we are not bound to scripture in that way
We can transcend the bookends that keep hopes and dreams at bay

 in the tragic scenes of life’s tableaus

We can secede from gravity and build it to the sky

As the offer finally closed
I selfishly opposed
For prescience is a gift not likely mine
So carefully we tread
For all those mortals fled
Remind us of our brevity of time

For we shall not pay Peter's Pence to the powers that be
An old stain on an innocent country
A link to the past so we sever the ties at last
To gain speed in these times of need
