Foresight

The piece is really two songs superimposed over each other: Murder Ballad by Jelly Roll Morton and Devil Blues by Charles Mingus. They are played in different keys and at different speeds. Morton's song is around 60 beats per minute and Mingus's song is around 90 beats per minute, roughly a 2:3 ratio. While both songs have the same 12-bar blues form, their predictable harmonic rhythms become strange as they criss-cross and interrupt each other. Recorded in the fall of 2016 with members of the Music Matters program, taught by Andrea Gullickson, at the Evergreen State College.
