One of the most iconic album series in drum n bass is back, the fourth edition of Platinum Breakz has arrived and some are saying it is the best in the series. The album is largely made up of Drum n Bass’s best new players, with appearances from the labels first wave also appearing. The strength of the artists on the compilation says much about the healthy position Metalheadz is in right now and as an overall package the album is a perfect instalment in an iconic series.

A relative newcomer to Headz but no newcomer to the craft, Om Unit has in one way found his way back home as a student of early Metalheadz and then making his name within other genres. Timelines is a B-boy anthem of breaks, subs and bongos. Om Unit’s contributions to Headz have been very stand-out, just check the way Timelines moves from B-boy breaks anthem into dub soundsystem shaker- which indeed was a timeline for our very genre.

Om Unit - Timelines

The album is largely made up of Drum n Bass’s best new players, with appearances from the labels first wave also appearing. The strength of the artists on the compilation says much about the healthy position Metalheadz is in right now and as an overall package the album is a perfect instalment in an iconic series.

Comparisons are easy to make but it really does feel like Bi-polar tread the same path as former Headz artists Hidden Agenda, and listening to Interlude it’s easy to hear why. The juxtaposition of stepping drums and deep bass against the soulful flourishes in the track really encapsulate that classic Headz soul.

Bipolar - Interlude

Friends and sparring partners Jubei and Consequence deliver perhaps one of the most dark tracks on the album. When we say dark we don’t mean horror- this is menacing, it has a huge foreboding sense of doom and hysteria. The track really feels like it’s in a straight jacket being transported between cells.

It’s hard to believe this is the debut track by Calibre on Metalheadz, and it’s already a firm dancefloor favourite thanks to its skipping drums and variants in bass. The drums have the unmistakeable Calibre air to them, the air that grabs you by the hips and demands you move and paired with the aforementioned screwface bass, it really is a foregone conclusion that you're going to move.

Calibre - Archive

Staccato drums are the order of the day with The Ascent, the drums play with the bass to make a huge groove that encourages unseen shapes on the dancefloor. It’s very grimy but oh so dancefloor, and it’s a welcome return to Metalheadz for The Invaderz.

Mr Heist is a very versatile artist and Great White shows this, the tracks slips between Tokyo and London. The feel is ‘future ideas meeting present day function’. Synth layers talk to drum machines, all wrapped in sub bass.

One of the more musical outing from 170's new shining lights was always destined to be on Headz, the intro is as forlorn as it beautiful. Skeptical’s drums are bring light to the heartbreak with Dub Phizix bass driving things forward, this one will be remembered for some time to come.

Another debut for Headz on Platinum Breakz 4 is Sunchase who brings us 420. Trainspotters will recognise the drums instantly but this is in another context completely, it’s more reminiscent of techno as much as it is late 90s drum n bass and is all the better for this reason.

The most emotive Ulterior Motive track up this point, the duo continue to bring their unique palette of colour to Headz. The intro features the work of Will Manning, a friend of the pair who plays violin and sets the tone for something very dramatic whilst painting brushstrokes against the blank canvas. Listen from start to finish to really understand the battle between good and evil encapsulated within the song.
