Nineteen Miniatures During COVID-19 is a project in response to the pandemic of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes the COVID-19 disease. The purpose of these miniatures is to create a commentary about the events surrounding the crisis, to support healthy habits during this time, and to provide new music in a way that can be experienced in a world in which concert halls are not safe. The set includes a total of nineteen miniatures for instruments including piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, horn, trumpet, piano, guitar, fixed media, violin, viola, violoncello, and double bass.

Meditation for Clarinet: 19 Miniatures During COVID-19 No. 4 Performed by Jacob Wolf

This miniature, Final Boss-Final Phase for fixed media, is an arrangement of Final Boss for piano. The program note for the original reads as follows: "This miniature, Final Boss, comes as a product of the increased time that I have spent inside and the consequently greater time that I have spent playing video games since March. 

Inspired by this media, I decided to limit myself to only being able to sound three notes at the same time, much like early gaming systems, which had very few channels for sound production. Given this limitation, I decided to focus on rhythmic and melodic elements in this piece in an attempt to capture the sense of urgency that a player feels in the final trial of their adventure, with all the quarters on the line!"

To differentiate the two, not only does this miniature use fixed, electronic sounds, but I also added effects such as delay, equalization, and spatialization. I also composed a new "percussion" part for the noise channel to add a bit of intensity into the mix. Additionally, this piece ends slightly differently, emphasizing the cyclic nature of video game music, especially during the 80s, in which similar sounds to those used in this piece were employed.

Final Boss-Final Phase for Fixed Media: 19 Miniatures During COVID-19 No. 15

This miniature, When Words Fall Short..., is a response to the indescribable pain that black people have been feeling for hundreds of years that is currently being brought to the forefront. While I claim in no way to currently, or ever be able to, understand this pain, I believe that it is my responsibility to do several things about it: 1. Educate myself about these issues 2. Black Lives Matter: When Words Fall Short... for Cello: 19 Miniatures During COVID-19 No. 11

Nicholas E. M. Osborn creates music to bring people closer together in a divisive world. Osborn’s music combines elements from genres including classical, jazz, and video game music to create unique sound worlds. He has also composed fixed media music for visual media, including film and several channels on the media streaming service, Twitch, and is always looking for opportunities to work with artists of different disciplines.

Osborn’s works have been read by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and performed during the Squirrel Island Chapel Summer Concert Series in Maine, at an event center in West Virginia, and for student recitals throughout Michigan and Ohio. Osborn’s music was also featured on Hope Will Carry Us, an album by Andrew Hosler.

Osborn is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the Society of Composers, Inc., and the Millennium Composers Initiative.

Osborn has studied with Christopher Dietz, Mikel Kuehn, Marilyn Shrude (Bowling Green State University), David Gillingham, and Jay Batzner (Central Michigan University). He has also participated in masterclasses with Christopher Theofanidis (recipient of the International Masterprize, the Rome Prize, and a Guggenheim fellowship) and David Maslanka (three-time National Endowment for the Arts recipient).

When he is not composing, Osborn enjoys playing video games, watching science, animation, and gaming channels on YouTube, and walks in the park.
