Stones Throw Records was founded in 1996 by DJ/Producer Chris Manak aka Peanut Butter Wolf as a means of releasing his now-classic debut album with MC Charizma who tragically was shot dead in a mugging in 1993.

Stones Throw is one of the few labels which I am constantly buying since I started to collect vinyl. As a result I got many special moments connected to nearly every Stones Throw record I own. The first record (My vinyl weighs a ton LP) was introduced to me by the true 182nd underground legend DJ Whoever (Whutupdoe!) about 15 years ago, the latest (Madlib Soundtrack for Our vinyl weighs a ton) is just two weeks in my bag; cool co-incidence with the titles by the way.

The idea for this personal Stones Throw best of mix series grew after watching the great documentary "Our vinyl weighs a ton" at Betalounge Hamburg in a room full of Stones Throw afficionados some months ago (the idea apparently grew slowly). The documentary is a must watch if you share even the smallest interest for the label! 

The first part brings the Rap side of the label into focus with Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, Dilla, Declaime and side projects like Lootpack, Quasimoto, Jaylib or Madvillian.

A second part will come up with a closer view to those records which mainly came out after Dillas death in 2006. With that tragic event Stones Throw fell into a kind of identity crisis with e.g. Madlib refusing to do any more Rap records (glad he changed his opinion - the latest collaboration with Freddie Gibbs is on heavy rotation since months). The label took a kind of musical turnaround in their artist rooster with artists like Dam Funk, James Pants, Boardwalk, Gary Davis and several other underground artists adding several musical dimensions which made the label even more interesting for me.

Todays guest in our podcast series plumbs the deeper ends of house and has turned in some serious tackle for Kolour, Whiskey Disco and Masterworks over the past while. We love his almost underwater disco and the state of hypnosis we find ourselves under when we listen to his productions. Frenchman 'Closed Paradise' not his real name surprisingly, has turned in a vinyl only mix leaning on his classic house influences and it's a breath of fresh air to say the least. Idris Muhammad's birthday was November 13, and so I thought I'd do a tribute episode to the legendary drummer (RIP) whose sound shaped so much of jazz, soul, funk, rock and later hip-hop. I was very lucky to witness his greatness once, several years ago at the Blue Note when he was playing with Ahmad Jamal's group. So here's a few tunes - only one from his own releases, while the rest are records he played on and shaped in his own way. I tried to stay away from the well-known classics but don't worry, it's all super funky.
