Cupid stood around in a restaurant talking about a big idea,                                                                                                    when he overheard a voice in the corner talking ‘bout an LOV…                                                                                                 All about this girl and the way she moved, dancing through a table and chair.                                                                          
I was looking at her as she waltzed around and baby she was looking at me. 

We’re talking ‘bout an LOV…E. Just talking ‘bout an LOV… 

I walked right up full of confidence, cooler than a cupid could be.                                                                               But, I lost my nerve and my cool was gone, embarrassed to acknowledge or speak.                                       
Words came out twisted and tied, talking like a bumbling bee.                                                                                    But, it’s hard sometimes to express yourself when you’re talking ‘bout and L.O.V.

You should’ve seen the look up-upon your face as I walked on through the door.                                                   
You were like a schoolgirl caught with a cigarette and your eyes hit the deck of the floor.                                 
“I couldn’t hook a call ‘cos I lost your number. I’m sorry if I let you down.                                                             
But, there were spies about in the house of love stealing every arrow around”.

Cupid flew down to the City of Love as the world looked on in reverse.                                                                The lovers from the café on the corner mile, they met by co-incidence.                                                                            He said “How did I end up here tonight in the cold and the wet and the rain?”                                                   
She said “Boys in love always come back around here again”.  

Don’t you come back around here again, no more.                                                                                                Don’t you come back around here again, little boy.

The Grand Illusion

Carry forth, bring back, upon your head, upon your back.                                                                                          Bring the water to the source. Make the reason fit the cause.                                                                            Take a journey to the east. Meet the priest you’d like to meet.                                                                               Beg to bow and kiss his feet and ask your wonder-whys. 

Build walls, make shapes, erect temples and drain lakes.                                                                                       Make friends, gather the foe to follow the thoughts they’ll never know.                                                                        All the leaders clean their faith, proclaim your faith’s the only way.                                                                              And, make you say the things you say then make you dress the same. 

We’re all under the same abuse. We’re all under the Grand Illusion. Allow me to carry on.

Go school, get a job, pay bills, make family.                                                                                                          Count your pennies and save your pay 
for a funeral day you’ll never see.                                                         
Wait around and watch the clock, 
the national jackpot’s all you’ve got.                                                                   And, tell your kids about the day you nearly hit the road. 

Leaders, clergy, barefoot saints who walk around anonymously,                                                                          collect the souls of those who sin and tax the shoes they’re walking in.                                                                      Make the punishment fit the crime for all the liars that like to lie.                                                                       And, scrutinise the powers that be for abusing what they own.

Like the king to the council, like the liar to the cheat.                                                                                           Like the servant to the queen, like the parishioner to the priest.                                                                        There’s always someone new to you who likes to tell you what to do. It sounded like some angel appeared,                                                                                                                   bringing you good news that makes you cry.                                                                                                                    It’s hardly like yourself to keep a halo in your pocket.                                                                                                      It must have been your Carillon.

I had a very strange dream last night.                                                                                                                                   It was calling out right on over the hill.   
                                                                                                                        
It sounded like some change in the spheres.                                                                                                                    Something opened up and bathed you in light.                                                                                                                               It’s hardly like yourself to keep heaven in your pocket.                                                                                                           It must have been your Carillon.

Nobody listened to a word I said. What’s the point of a verse or a picture in the paper?                                    
Nobody seemed to understand why Jacqui had an accident                                                                                     after the morning they raised up the rent, 
or why her boyfriend hung himself. 

She said “It’s all in your mind. It’s all in your head”.                                                                                                        And then she went to bed.                                                                                                                                        

Outside St. Stephen’s Church there’s a crowd on the curb and a paramedic waiting with a parcel in his hand.                                                                                                                        Somebody took an overdose, beat up the baby then gave up the ghost                                                                         and left Friday's post there on the stairs and nobody cares.       

The people that I met today, every erstwhile friend or avoidable acquaintance, seemed to lack some common sense.                                                                                                                             They complain about the youth of today.                                                                                                                    Well, how do you expect them to get anywhere                                                                                                          when your expectations cannot overtake the minimum wage. 

It’s raining on St. David’s Day. It’s the first of March and I wish it was May.                                                                      I wonder how I’ll make my great escape.                                                                                                                     Will I ever get out of the maze or forever remain like a rat in a cage?                                                                 Some quiet existence miles away.                                                                                                                                There’s a riot going on up ahead,                                                                                                                                       the police have arrived now they beat and arrest.                                                                                                          While Babylon’s burning you’re in bed.                                                                                                                               And you wish you were dead. 

Isn’t it strange when someone tells you both sides of a different story? Or am I talking to myself?                             

I guess I’m living in hell.

I should have known when I first walked in at nine O’clock that Monday morning, I nearly lost my eye out.                                                                                                                                                            You looked cute in a pencil suit and the way you fold that foolscap paper, smiling at the bosses.                                     
You know, I used a little muscle on the dumb machine as I saw you by the photocopier, I clocked you watching.

You did it again around twelve p.m. as you left your desk and ate a sandwich,                                                       silent with cups of coffee.                                                                                                                                                                        There’s a fantasy at the factory about watching women in the workplace.                                                                           I clocked you watching.

Nick Ellis is a Liverpool based singer/songwriter and guitarist performing a style of streetscape narrative-noir blended with a classic British acoustic approach. Song and Melody. Some people call it folk, some just call it good old fashioned song craft. Using a blend of rhythmic attack and finger-quick lucidity, his sound has been described as ‘a conversation between Elvis Costello and John Martyn’. Ellis is also is the lead singer/songwriter with Liverpool beat modernists The Blue Soul. 
Nick Ellis on writing: “…I see my Songs as chapters and scenes. My Albums as movies and books.  Except, in this film, these stories are true…”
Nick Ellis on his sound: “…I like to use the guitar polyphonically when I play solo. I like to make it sound like a busy day, a place, an environment. And incorporate all those sounds you hear in the street. The conversations. The rhythms of the rain. The music of the traffic.”
