Malika’s Poetry Kitchen is a community of poets dedicated to developing their craft. Founded in 2001 and based in London, the collective’s influence on the contemporary poetry and spoken word scene has reached far beyond the capital.

This is a unique opportunity to hear the work of two Kitchen founders, Malika Booker and Jacob Sam La Rose, plus Jill Abram, Rishi Dastidar, Seraphima Kennedy and Peter Raynard.

Versus Medici’, Nick Makoha is commisione poem for Cerdd Tafod Arall | Music of Another Tongue is a project led by Hanan Issa, National Poet of Wales, where she challenged herself and six poets known for their experimental use of language to learn about and use Cynghanedd in their work. Following an online crash course on cynghanedd and Welsh verse delivered by Mererid Hopwood and Eurig Salisbury, the poets composed a piece inspired by what they have learned about this ‘sophisticated system of sound patterning’.

Dr Nick Makoha is a Ugandan poet and playwright based in London and founder of Obsidian Foundation. His new collection The New Carthaginians is published on Penguin. Winner of the 2021 Ivan Juritz Prize and the Poetry London Prize. In 2017, Nick’s debut collection, Kingdom of Gravity, was shortlisted for the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection and was one of the Guardian’s best books of the year. His poems have appeared in Poetry, the Cambridge Review, the New York Times, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, Rialto, Poetry London, TriQuarterly Review, 5 Dials, Boston Review, Callaloo Birmingham Lit Journal and Wasafiri.
