NICHOLAS RENARD, host/reporter:

From The Kansas View in Lawrence, Kansas, I’m Nicholas Renard.

RENARD: Amid the growing number of 3D film releases, specifically James Cameron’s recent “Titanic 3D,” The Kansas View looked to KU students for their takes on the 3D phenomenon.

RENARD: Junior Tyler Kitson, a psychology major and self-proclaimed film buff, said he thought “Titanic’s” makeover was attractive but did not warrant a rerelease.

Mr. TYLER KITSON: I don’t think that it was necessarily needed to be in 3D, but I thought it was just as good as it was the first day it came out. Definitely better graphics.

RENARD: However, Kitson said the 3D effects were easy to miss.

Mr. TYLER KITSON: In some scenes it was awesome and in other scenes, I mean, throughout most of the movie, I’d say, I didn’t even notice it was 3D.

RENARD: He added that while 3D is on the rise, lack of audience interest will soon lead to its decline.

Mr. TYLER KITSON: “Avatar” was the only one that was truly meant for 3D and since then they’ve all been kind of stupid, little kid movies that come out in 3D that really aren’t that great and just meant to make money. So I think people are going to realize that and stop going to them.

RENARD: Michael Raven, a junior majoring in philosophy, also said 3D peaked with “Avatar,” and outlined two reasons why he feels 3D won’t last.

Mr. MICHAEL RAVEN: First is how expensive it is, and second is that it allows people to feel justified in just rereleasing movies in 3d instead of coming out with any new movies and I feel like that kind of subtracts from the movie industry in general.
