Mined Minds

Recording of a Sound Art installation.The sound, Aum, is used in prayers, chants and meditations to quiet the mind and connect with the inner self. This piece is a recording of a sound installation whose space had been created to house a digital emulation and mutation of "Aum".

The space consisted of 5 handmade instruments based on the Hurdy Gurdy that were all motorised and miked up, with the acoustic sound being processed live and played out the set of speakers in each one.The 17 minute composition written for the Hurdy Gurdies echoes the 3 constituent parts of Aum.

A - symbolises Brahma, the god of creation
U - Vishnu, the preserver
and M - symbolises Shiva, the destroyer

In the composition, Creation is characterised by sporadic staccato bursts &amp; shimmering textures with layered delays that build up complex polyrhythms. This evolves into the longer, slow evolving Preservation, with long held tones and gradual pitch climbs and falls. The piece ends with Destruction, which first has descending filtered sweeps, progressing into a pitchless, desolate soundscape.

All sounds you will hear were created live - no sampling was used.
