Tonight’s jam with the OXI Coral, exploring a few ideas

Thanks for listening to these two tracks. They are both based on the same basic pattern but in one I've used a major scale and the other I've switched it to D minor. All sequenced using the brilliant Oxi One and a modular rack comprising of an Oxi Coral, patched via a Mimeophon to the audio output. 

As ever I've not named any of my tracks other than to use the project and file name taken straight off my Bluebox, the device I use for mixing and recording to audio files.

Second Foray Into Ambience

The other evening I was exploring UVI's new version of Falcon alongside Ableton. I love it!

I switched through various libraries with the product and recorded this collection of ideas. All fairly raw, no editing, just a bit of reverb on the send.

Cinematic - Medley - 1

Earlier this week I sampled the train journey from Paddington to Liverpool Street on the Elizabeth Line. I wanted to combine this with a set of samples provided by the Roland SP404 and playing live on the OP1 Field. The aim to create a raw, unedited jam in one take and share it.

I've always been inspired by the old Detroit Techno scene, people like Derrick May and his use of drum machines. In this case I was using the Digitakt, some stock samples plus a couple of my own and set up some patterns. I jammed for a good seven minutes and love the results of the session!

I have been exploring different genres of music over the years both as a listener and a composer. Jazz and other genres have underpinned a lot of my favourite pieces of music from George Benson to Steely Dan, so I am looking at ways of blending electonica and jazz..... not the case with this track, it's just a simple two instrument affair between a piano and upright bass.

Naming tracks is difficult but listening to this a few times, for some reason reminded me of the recent Northern Lights that many people witnessed around the world.

This track was produced with the highly innovative Tardigrain granular synthesizer by developer Humbletune. Enjoy this experimental journey!

This track was composed with film in mind, the idea of storytelling and listening back to my recording once I’d mastered it in Logic conjured up an image of the sea, the vastness of our oceans. So that image resonated with me.

The story of the sea

Quite a departure from my usual works and that I suspect is because the approach I took was different. Normally I work with a synth/drum/bass setup and simply jam, which works well. However here, I’ve created an arrangement that is perhaps more akin to rock or a film score, a different genre for me. 

It revolves around the key of Am with plenty of inversions on  the theme and has more of a band feel about it. 

I hope you like it. I’m rather proud of it.

Voyage

Striving to come up with something frequently is a challenge for sure but it will help you develop key skills in music production, including ways of generating more notes than you need when using sequencing tools and then filtering some of it out. In this instance, I am using

Along with Bleass Delay (really shapes the sound in this massively), GlitchCore, Cascade, Weeping Wall and Eventide Blackhole for effects.
The Oxi one was connected via Bluetooth and the whole setup routed through my Arturia Minifuse 4 for monitoring. This I will bring along with me to the next event I perform at this summer, which will be the very first time in my entire life I have done such a thing.

I’ve hidden for many years behind the computer, releasing stuff on Soundcloud for ages but have never performed in front of people. So I shall let you know when I do and give you the wrong dates, as I am as shy as f**k. Except I’m not, I just think I am.

I know Ben from ModCaf is probably reading this.

So the Oxi was running in Stochastic mode C Phyrigian I think I’d set it to, as that is a favourite scale, commonly used too from what I’ve read.

As a side note, I am writing this on my iPad but using a regular Apple wireless keyboard to do so, it works very well. I never tried this with the old tablet.

I’ve named this Atomic Blipbox because two of the plugins I used for this one were Atoms by Baby Audio and Blip Box amongst many others.
