“Nick Drake is an artist who genuinely has the power to change the lives of those who have listened to him. His recordings show us a musician who had everything: an extraordinary guitar technique, a beautiful voice and an unmatched song writing ability. But, I believe, perhaps more important than any of this was his ability to express human emotion, and even the mystical, with a melody. This is, of course, the keystone of music.

It is for these reasons that I was drawn first to love the songs of Nick Drake and, then later, to want to learn them. I have been playing them in one form or another for many years now and I am as awed now by them as I ever was. Along the way I have been lucky enough to work with contemporaries of Nick Drake such as Vashti Bunyan who recorded on the same label with Joe Boyd (producer of Nick Drake's first two albums). I was also fortunate to work with Joe Boyd himself in preparation for concerts at the London Barbican.

In the process of learning and performing Nick Drake’s songs I have realised again something which is easily forgotten when thinking of his music: for all it may appear gentle, even quiet at times, it is actually highly rhythmic, driving and syncopated.. in fact, it swings. 

In the ‘Nicked Drake’ concerts my aim is to play the songs as true to the original versions recorded by Nick Drake as possible, with no deliberate reinterpretation. This is important to me because, as a fan myself, this is what I would like to hear, but also because I know how intricately and carefully they were composed by Drake in the first place.”
