Onmyoji were shamans in Japan during the Heian period. In modern terms, they held the social status of civil servants and were composed of around 70 individuals who played a crucial role in guiding the nation. Their offices were located closest to the Emperor's residence.

Their main tasks included astronomical observation and the creation of calendars. These calendars contained daily recommendations and precautions based on astronomical observations and divination techniques passed down from ancient China. For example, they detailed the best days to cut nails—fingernails on the day of the ox, toenails on the day of the tiger—as well as days to avoid going out, days when digging or moving earth was forbidden, and even directions from which purchasing pets was considered inauspicious. Heian aristocrats would begin their day by consulting the calendar and deciding their actions based on these guidelines.

Interestingly, parts of the information from these calendars created by the Onmyoji are still available in real-time today and can be purchased at bookstores. I personally reference this calendar daily to guide my activities, although most modern Japanese people no longer take an interest in it.

Among the Onmyoji, Abe no Seimei, a real historical figure who has been portrayed in movies and dramas, is the most famous. In modern terms, he seemed to possess supernatural abilities, such as using psychic powers or magic. Notably, he commanded seven deities (known as the Seven Gods) to assist him in his work. These deities had such eerie appearances that Seimei's wife refused to let them enter their residence, so they would wait under Ichijo Modoribashi Bridge. This bridge still exists in Kyoto, and there are commemorative portraits of the Seven Gods placed there.

There is even an anecdote that Abe no Seimei occasionally had the Seven Gods help with cleaning.

The insect sounds in the intro are the chirping of crickets, commonly heard throughout Japan in autumn. Since around spring, I occasionally spotted one in my bathroom at night. Although it was still young and small in spring, one of its jumping legs was already missing. I don’t know whether it was born that way or lost it in an accident, but seeing it struggle in the empty bathtub broke my heart, so I started placing pieces of cabbage in the tub. Eventually, I occasionally saw the one-legged cricket eating the cabbage.

As time passed and autumn arrived, one night, I heard the sound of a cricket chirping from the bathroom. When I went to check, I found that it was the one-legged cricket chirping for the first time. I hurriedly grabbed a recorder and recorded its strong, heartfelt song for almost two hours as it clung to the cabbage. When it finished chirping, it went back down the drain, and that was the last time I saw it. The recorded sound is undoubtedly its farewell song.
