Welcome back after our holiday hiatus. It's been a lovely little break but we are happy to be getting back to it over at the podcast and bring you all some tasty informational music production & DJ nuggets.

For episode four Guava is joined by Breaka and our good friend who travelled all the way down from the freezing cold north to join them, Adam Pits.

On the discussion menu that evening they found the topics of mix downs for clubs, performance anxiety and where to find inspiration for your tracks. They also attempted to write the squelchiest track of all time.

Manchester producer Walton has always had an eye for the darker spectrum of dance sounds. Starting out on Hyperdub before becoming a regular on Tectonic, Walton has been making shadowy records that bang for almost a decade. His most recent offering is ‘Depth Charge’, marking his first release on Munich’s revered Ilian Tape label and his strongest 12″ to date. Ahead of a 24-hour Ilian Tape takeover this weekend at FOLD, where he’ll be spinning alongside label heads Zenker Brothers plus Skee Mask, Stenny and more, Walton is the next in line in our mix series. Dark, heavy and rolling, it’s Walton through and through, pushing acid, breakbeat, pointillist techno and more in the mix.

10 Years of WNCL Recordings #1: West Norwood Cassette Library vs LMajor

Ranging from deep and dubby to bass-heavy and bumpy,  Pugilist‘s musical creations have been picked up by such labels as Whities, Zam Zam and Modern Hypnosis in recent years, but it’s his brilliant new three-tracker on DJ Oberman’s Nous’klaer Audio that really caught our attention.

With that in mind, we reached out to see if he would be interested in laying down a mix for us. The result is a chuggy, bass-driven and highly percussive journey through all things dub, slo-mo techno and broken beat, with almost forty tracks crammed into the one hour and thirty-six-minute long recording – many of which unreleased. Off The Record Mix Series 8: Pugilist

Martyn draws from his roots with deep, genre-spanning percussive sounds for the 200th mix in our series. Operating independently of genres and bpm, his mix offers lots of fresh perspective on a typically UK club sound, with an array of hefty selections extending from techno to drum and bass. It's with this seemingly effortless style and inventiveness that Martyn's sound continues to appeal to a broad range of dance music selectors and fans.

As lockdown continues into its third week, we’re delighted to bring a welcome distraction in the form of DRIFT 016 by Frazer Ray (FKA Soundbwoy Killah). Having gone from strength to strength in recent years, he was due to appear in Edinburgh at The Mash House with Artiisan last month. Unfortunately, the event did not go ahead and everyone involved was understandably gutted! Don’t worry, however, as we have a 60 minute mix from the man himself to tide you over until the event is rescheduled.

The London based DJ’s style envelopes everything the UK scene has to offer and his releases vary from garage and house right through to breakneck jungle. This is especially apparent on his stellar album Halcyon Daze which came out on Sneaker Social Club last year. Other outstanding works include his Tell Me EP (Warehouse Rave) which propelled him into a small group of producers at the forefront of the UK breaks scene. In addition to all this, he holds a residency at Rinse FM. His show has had some outstanding guests such as Interplanetary Criminal, Breaka and L U C Y with his most recent show consisting of 2 hours of his own unreleased music. Well worth checking out!

For his DRIFT mix, Frazer brings a wonderful collection of the more chill end of the UK spectrum. Filled with floaty breaks, trippy 2 step beats and atmospheric vibes, it is ideal listening during isolation. Stick it on and drift away for 60 minutes!

K-LONE’s Cape Cira LP is one of the prettiest records you’ll hear all year in techno or any other genre. The Wisdom Teeth boss created a verdant sonic world on that album, one where rippling beats came drenched in sun-dappled atmospheres and melodies that evoked palm trees swaying in a breeze. On this exclusive mix, @k-lone93 lets us in on some of the music that inspired the record. The mix’s first half largely eschews dancefloor pulses in favour of dreamy flushes of sound - while there are some gently danceable numbers in here from the likes of DJ Python and Duckett, the entries around them emphasise new-age-inspired textures in a manner that draws a clear line to Cape Cira. We then enter a territory of coy techno and micro-house throbs, one where Jan Jelinek’s ‘Rock In The Video Age’ sets the tone, before blissing out with pure ambiences at the mix’s close. 

"This mix is a selection of cuts from my favourite albums I was listening to around the time of writing Cape Cira, mostly the sort of stuff for listening to at home rather than the club. Featuring music from Leif, Steve Reich, Loidis, Duckett, Kelly Lee Owens, Pole, Jan Jenelik, Don't DJ & Visible Cloaks."
