Mysterious Ways (NICO & THE ETHIOPIAN PEGASUS)

Since first joining forces in the studio at the dawn of the 2000s, Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi have released countless collaborative singles and albums, each showcasing distinctively different takes on the “cosmic sound” that Baldelli did more than anyone else to define in the early 1980s.

Aloteva marks the pair’s first joint release for Leng Records, and Baldelli’s return to the label following last year’s acclaimed full-length collaboration with Marco Fratty, Oil Painting. It boasts a quartet of cuts that further refine the pair’s now-familiar joint style, which combines elements of dub disco, space rock, Italo-disco, funk and Afro-cosmic (another style which Baldelli arguably created via his DJ sets at the legendary Cosmic Club).

Those who’ve followed the experienced Italian pair’s career over the last two decades will enjoy the heavy and sweaty title track, a cowbell-sporting chunk of funk-fuelled cosmic disco decadence piled high with loose-limbed drums, throbbing synthesizer arpeggio lines, flanged guitar riffs and rubbery, low-slung bass.

The pair’s love of dub disco is further explored on the deliciously deep and warming ‘Deflector’, a pitched-down delight in which intergalactic chords, snaking saxophone motifs and echoing percussion hits rise above a metronomic beat and another headline-grabbing bassline. 

‘Sonora’, which opens the flipside of the vinyl version of the release, is arguably even more cosmic and spaced-out. Light and airy thanks to a sparse, clicking drum machine rhythm, hypnotic bassline and gently pulsing synth chords, the track is marked out by some near horizontal, echo-laden jazz guitar solos that seemingly tumble down across the sound space.

To round off a strong EP, Baldelli and Dionigi deliver ‘Time Is Plastic’, whose icy ambient intro and blazed spoken word samples quickly segue into another elastic cosmic funk groove. This time round, the star attraction is the duo’s classy combination of liquid bass guitar and excitement-packed slap-bass. Throw in some gnarled, flash-fried funk guitar riffs and a heady, hypnotic mood, and you have another deep space gem from the most cosmic duo in the business.

As part of the ten-year anniversary Dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-EP series. Split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of Tony Allen’s ‘Asiko (In A Silent Mix)’ originally released in 1999 and remixes by Motor City Drum Ensemble and Ricardo Villalobos. The last record in the series sees MCDE delivering a trademark track that will send dance floors on fire worldwide.

Part two of the EP features the Motor City Drum Ensemble remix, and the original “In A Silent Mix” version from 1999; a track out of its time when released on Allen’s sole record “Black Voices”. A long serving Dekmantel veteran, Danilo Plessow was there from the start. After compiling the first Selector’s compilation last year, MCDE turns Tony Allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. The final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear MCDE play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. The organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete Motor City style.

Highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the Dutch label and festival series, the EPs to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. The EP series kicked off in March 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of Gigi Masin, Lena Willikens, Burnt Friedman, Donato Dozzy, The Egyptian Lover, Palms Trax, and more.

Ben Gomori delivers another two carefully-crafted reworks for Sterns Edits, both tried and tested to ensure maximum dancefloor impact.

Guinean guitar master Djessou Mory Kante's blistering style makes for propulsive dancefloor material when paired with a chunked-up house rhythm, with Gomori utilising the stems available to add subtle FX trickery to the intricate melodics of the original. The whole affair builds and rolls in incessant fashion, with another riveting bassline mirroring and counterbalancing the main motifs.

The wild sounds of Senagelese legends Orchestra Baobab's nine-minute-odyssey 'Sibou Odia' is a formidable piece of work that shows the band's stunning musicianship in fine style. With only the original track to work from and no stems, Gomori hones in on the sections where the groove is dominant and the raucous solos potently cut through. The skanking rhythms are intact, with a huge bassline pushing the proceedings forward throughout.

Does Ronaldo (the original one) need an introduction? From PSV Eindhoven to FC Barcelona, the man’s force on the field knew no limits. The Brazilian scored 467 goals in his 678 games professional career plus 2x World Cups with the Brasil National Team.

Around six years ago, a bunch of djs, musicians and music lovers started gathering for weekly five-a-side football matches on a small, run-down pitch in Kreuzberg 61. Because much like music, football brings people together, wherever they are from. This release has been a long time coming and collects tracks by players from seven different nationalities, all based in Berlin, united by both their love of the beautiful game as well as their passion for electronic club music.

Eleven tracks are on offer (what did you expect?), each one dedicated to the composer's football hero - a tribute to their unique skill and the beautiful moments they've brought us on the pitch. As such, the tracklist forms an all-star fantasy "Mannschaft".

Compiled by player-coach Tristan Jong (aka Gratts) and made possible thanks to Markus Lindner (aka Delfonic), the package lives on the grass pitch between corner flags techno, deep house, disco and broken beats. It features music by established underground artists like Venezualan digger Trujillo, We Play House Recordings stalwart Harry Baldi or Juliano as well as debuts from the likes of Nemorna, James Martin and plenty more indeed. Five of the tracks are pressed loud onto vinyl as a club sampler - including full artwork comprising some of the team pictures taken throughout the years - with a free download link to the complete 11 track compilation.
