"moDernisT" was created by salvaging the sounds lost to mp3 compression from the song "Tom's Diner", famously used as one of the main controls in the listening tests to develop the MP3 encoding algorithm. Here we find the form of the song intact, but the details are just remnants of the original, scrambled artifacts hinting at what once was.

The MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Layer III standard, more commonly referred to as MP3, has become a nearly ubiquitous digital audio file format. First published in 1993, this codec implements a lossy compression algorithm based on a perceptual model of human hearing. Listening tests, primarily designed by and for western-european men, and using the music they liked, were used to refine the encoder. These tests determined which sounds were perceptually important and which could be erased or altered, ostensibly without being noticed. What are these lost sounds? Are they sounds which human ears can not hear in their original contexts due to our perceptual limitations, or are they simply encoding detritus? It is commonly accepted that MP3's create audible artifacts such as pre-echo, but what does the music which this codec deletes sound like? In the work presented here, techniques are considered and developed to recover these lost sounds, the ghosts in the MP3, and reformulate these sounds as art.

Though no longer based in Sydney’s Inner West, jobfit’s music continues to hold space for those who traverse its parks, pubs and parties.

For their third release on Pure Space, jobfit share their new EP ‘time to make Daddy some money’.

Full of swirling synths, deep bass and acidic tastes, this EP continues jobfit’s splicing together of poetry and dance music. Where crisp percussion arrests tension, immersive pads hold you in - releasing only to rebuild again and again.

This release/rebuild is the perfect support for the vocals. Written between Sydney’s two lockdowns, the EP is a woozy state of inertia. There are sneaks of escape - outta Sydney, on the street, in the studio. But there’s also a state of being trapped - in the kitchen, in the Poet, in the interior. Both inSide and inSelf. The vocalist always uneasy, knowing what could come. And then it does: ‘Collar Mourning’ rounds us out for another stretch between “four walls and 34 square metres / captures and holds”.

Yet there are always moments of respite, a settling into place, making peace, the “alla norma”. It’s dance music for those stuck at home! For driving! For traversing space and time, beer belly wriggling into jeans, lurching up Newtown’s drunken pipeline, reminiscing on times connecting, over there, or there, or there… “smiling, and knowing and turning still.”

LA SALAMI ANNOUNCES NEW EP AND RUN OF NINE LONDON SHOWS

The ever-­enigmatic LA Salami has announced the release of a new nine track EP to be released over a run of nine London dates in nine weeks, each date in celebration of a track from his extensive new release. LA’s charming and wistful story-­telling has already found the troubadour an avid audience that includes support from the fashion powerhouse Burberry, as well as features in The Evening Standard, The 405, and on the airwaves of BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC 6Music, BBC London and XFM. As ever the words come better from the songsmith himself, and here’s what he had to say about the new release and series of shows;

"I was a young man, starving and smoking and trying to be an artist. I did most of my singing under the creaky stalls in London’s royal court of open mics. Let that settle in, cut my teeth at forgetting my words for the first time some time in the winter of twenty oh nine. Wading home that night, my toes burning, my throat sealed shut, my back door thoughts chasing John Fante up the hill of Sisyphus like a herd of silent laughing tumbleweed, I stopped in my tracks. The time had come to take stock. Fair weather or foul, certain forces in the world were at work to destroy me.

“Lookman Adekunle Salami, I said, hold it. Is everything going according to plan? Are you sticking by your name? The name coincidence conjured up?

"I decided, no. To be swallowed whole by your intentions is as honest as you can be to fate. This 9 track EP is only an advertiser to honesty. The truth is yet to come. I aim to be able to look you in the eye and tell you that this is who I am. After being lost like a bowing cannonball in the secret courtesys of Xfm radio, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6; after being lost on the pages of the Evening Standard, in the mansions of Burberry Fashion, find me now on nine separate occasions in London, in nine separate locations, over nine hot weeks, one for every song on the EP, being honest. For now, come by the river and waste a little time with a brother, the way Otis Redding did, only nothing like how he did whatsoever…“

On his debut solo LP ‘Utility’, Barker [@voltek] turns his focus toward melding experimentation and dancefloor pragmatism with the psychology behind the musical decision making process.

‘Utility’ is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas: from models for quantifying pleasure and “gradients of bliss” to abolishing suffering for sentient beings (not just people) through the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology. Over nine tracks, Barker’s vision ebbs and flows through waves of deeply psychedelic musical vignettes; free-floating and futuristic melodies and rhythms as targeted brain stimulation.
