Urban Sampling is the result of a residency about the urban soundscape of Palermo. A project about how an untouchable patrimony could be understood and re defined. The composition is made using the recordings of the voices from the traditional markets of Palermo.

commissionata dal Centro teatrale Bresciano nell'ambito dell'evento "The big beat night", Notte della Cultura 2017.

Urban beats è un percorso di ricerca dedicato all’immagine sonora della città di Brescia, che esplora tanto il suo flusso ritmico, quanto il suo battito più intimo. Si tratta di un’indagine che parte dalla raccolta delle caratteristiche acustiche del quotidiano per arrivare a suggerire un’interpretazione del “senso ritmico” della città e del territorio che la circonda; una ricognizione delle voci e delle tracce che in essa resistono, restano dissidenti, e di quelle che invece sono schiacciate dal peso del conformismo: battute, fallite.

In the small village of Città Sant’Angelo the site specific participatory performance was developed thanks to a long distance art residency in the framework of the festival ‘Arte in centro’, promoted by the contemporary art collecive ‘New Operation Wave’ (NOW), and curated by Barbara Nardacchione.
The process of collecting an archive of field recordings from the inhabitants’s suggestions intends to stimulate the their sonic perception, while during the final performance the public is directly invited to select from the same archive the sounds to be played.

Tentativi di dialogo con un sindaco
La traccia nasce dal periodo di residenza svolto a Guardia Sanframondi nel luglio 2018, e in particolare mette in dialogo alcune registrazioni ambientali realizzate nel cuore del centro storico con un discorso del Sindaco del Comune, Floriano Panza, invitato ad intervenire durante la performance finale della residenza.
Il collage che ne deriva unisce provocatoriamente la curiosità dell’amministrazione comunale riguardo al tema del paesaggio sonoro, la retorica del discorso politico incentrato sullo sviluppo territoriale, e le voci del territorio che invecchiano pregando con Radio Maria.

In the framework of the project ‘Video ritratti in sardegna’, the workshop ‘Reframing 3: Sounds, films, margins’ was organised by the cultural association ‘L’ambulante’ in order to investigate the sonic environment of one of the most marginalised areas in Cagliari, Italy.

Noci is a small city close to Bari, Italy, where ‘Piccolo festival della parola’ takes place every year gathering artists, poets, and authors. 
Within this framework the resdency aimed to explore sounds from the everyday life of the city, and the typicality of its natural surroundings, looking for the inner ‘voice’ of the territory.

‘Sonic hypothesis’ is a garden collecting attractions, suggesting unexpected movements, inviting to acknowledge the seductive aptitude of sound within a designed environment.

Nicola Di Croce is a Venice based, musician, composer, architect and scholar.  

His main research deals with the relation between territory and sound. The Listening and fieldrecording  practices lead together to a new perception of the environment, where the sound language becomes a narrative and design vehicle. Fragments to be re-mixed as the essential tool for the understanding and the redefinition of  the surrounding space.  

He has released various acoustic and electronic records and has scored and contributed music to many short films, art installations and multimedia productions, working for prestigious cultural Institutions such as the Venice Biennale.
