Dancing Queen

Here's a demo of a folk song - did drums. violin, 2 guitars,bass and a vocal on a Fostex 4 track then tracked vocal and dubbed harp and tambourine and backing vocal on the 8 track at More FM in CH CH - thanks to Lynn Wilson for operating at that session...... Sonya Pegg and Ian Swansbury are on backing vocal, Mark Painter on drums, Ruth Close on violin - this would have been back in 1993 I think, although I wrote the song while I was busking in Auckland in 1987 after I met Jackie Higgins who was selling her craft jewelry in Vulcan Lane

Lay Me Down

Featuring a phenomenal Brendon Power harmonica contribution, 'Please Social Welfare' is a satire on the welfare state rampant in the late 80's in Auckland. I lifted the 'melody' from Bob Dylan & The Band's song "Please Mrs Henry' off The Basement Tapes and re-wrote the words. 
Recorded by students at The School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in Parnell, Auckland around 1988/9, Bullfrog Rata plays bass,  Darren (Snow) Bognuda is on drums, I play acoustic guitar and sing. Backing vocals include Kathleen O'Connor and noted Auckland photographer Graham Hooper. I can't recall who did the piano so apologies there.  I had met Brendon and his wife the night before at the Open Late Cafe on Ponsonby Road and told him of the session the next day - he kindly turned up and did this blistering performance first time in 1 single take. He went on to have and still enjoys a well deserved international career and has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney and even has designed his own 'Power Harp' range.

'Darkest Ages'  is the title track of a cassette album I did in 1987/8.  I knew about Craig Harrison's 'Tomorrow Will Be A Lovely Day' - this song is about a nuclear explosion over Auckland harbour bridge one morning during the drive to work.  George Curach plays bass on this - he'd just got a fancy new Yamaha headless bass and bought it round to my studio in Greenlane, Auckland. George had recorded 'Grafton Bridge' live in Steve Menzies's bedroom on a quarter inch reel to reel for us - another song on the album and so began a long collaboration with George doing original demos and later cover material in 'Strange Brew' and 'Cross Street Connection'.  I sing and play guitars on this and I suspect George helped out programming the Roland 505 drums. Another demo on the trusty Fostex 4 track cassette recorder.  I played a Tokai 'Strat' with a Paul Crowther Hotcake into a Selmer 'Treble and Bass' 50 valve head through a Marshall 10 inch speaker cabinet. the Selmer had a snakeskin look cabinet - I wish I still had it.

Darkest Ages

"Grafton Bridge' was the first song I recorded in Auckland. It was done in Steve Menzies's bedroom at his parent's home in Brown's Bay, Auckland. It was the first time I met George Curach who turned up with his rack of Boss half rack size effects units. He hooked them up to my small 8 channel desk and we recorded live into a 1/4 inch Sony reel to reel I had. Mike Jenkinson later made up a case and power supply for the boss units when I bought the rack off George - I still have it and use it to this day. Thanks Mike - I don't believe you ever got more than a thank you, but what you did at the time really helped me and I really appreciate it to this day. This song got to number 8 on the BFM Top 13 at the time.  Steve Menzies played guitar, Stevo played drums and I played bass and did the vocal. You can't believe the excitement when we gathered at Wayne McKenzie's place next door to me on King Edward Street, off Dominion Road, to hear it for the first time on the radio on a Saturday afternoon program they broadcast. George and I went on to make a good living out of music together and I learned so much from him. Thanks George - this one's for you, cheers Nic

Grafton Bridge

'Hughie Green' hosted a talent show 'Opportunity Knocks' on television in the UK during the 1960s. In this song I was asking myself why I wasn't really 'getting on with it' around 1992 - I was also attempting to use a blues approach in the style of John Mayall's blues band. I couldn't get the fat sound I wanted out of my strat so I end ended up using my Ovation acoustic guitar with its 13 - 56mm strings. The wound G string kept breaking on the bends so I got a plain steel banjo string of the same gauge and used that instead. Using a Paul Crowther Hotcake into the Selmer Treble and Bass 50 and I got the sound I wanted. Mark Painter played drums and Mike Le Petit played keyboards. I sang, played guitar and bass. We used to play this song in 'John Citizen' a 6 piece band I had in Christchurch in the early 90s.This demo was recorded onto a Fostex 4 track cassette recorder.
