Hi all, I'm very sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I'm wondering if there are any cheaper alternatives to the EEPROM programmer in lieu of the one Ben Eater recommended on his website.


I bought a 6502 kit a few months ago and finally got around to putting it together. I decided not to buy the ~$70 EEPROM programmer and opted to build an Arduino programmer (much cheaper and probably a good experience). It doesn't work and I don't know why.


I have had good luck with the TL866II plus (Chinese) programmer, but I use Linux and the github community - which has provided very good support. Seems to work best with modern EEPROM and SEEPROMs, which is all I needed. I don't care for that fancy GUI junk, so that lack of a GUI is of no concern to me.



Although it was originally designed as a one-off programmer to be used on a breadboard,there are now some PCB versions as well. The PCB page has descriptions with linksto the KiCad schematics and Gerber files.





I have an old PCB3b Willem EEPROM programmer. The parallel port required to program PROMs/EPROMs/EEPROMs requires an ECP-mode parallel port (for bi-directional data transfer) which AFAIK excludes all of the USB-to-Printer devices available which are likely "data-out" only. Since PCs with a REAL parallel port are becoming more scarce (particularly in my house), I think it might be a doable project to put together a level shifter circuit to convert from the RPi's 3.3V GPIOs to the Willem's 5V bi-directional (though I think the pins are dedicated inputs or outputs) data port.


I'm trying to modify Ben Eater's eeprom programmer to flash a 32K eeprom, since the arduino has 32K of program data total the data wouldn't fit in the program. So I wrote a python program using pySerial to send the data in chunks of 256 bytes over serial. The arduino program works correctly when I manually send the data over the serial monitor, and the python program works correctly when I print the values to a console as a test, but when I actually run the program over serial it seems to only write zeros to the eeprom. Additionally, the Rx led on the arduino seems to be lighting up with the correct data, but like I said only zeros are written.


I want to buy a eeprom programmer,ebay is full of different models not sure which 1 to get.
I don't want something expensive and complex,since i will prolly use it,only in cases when i can't flash a bios using the software method.
Only thing i need is,to be able is to flash this 2 types of eeprom.


ps. 
just don't expect these programmers to work wonders, support exotic chips or not having a bug or two (in new chips, the ancient ones we deal with are fine), there is a reason they cost only a small fraction of a good/pro programmer ?


Willem programmers are the bottom of the barrel but they do work for what they are. For only a couple bucks more you can get a TL866 as mentioned a couple times in this thread. The TL866 and any of it's variants\successors are far superior to those entry level Willem PCB only programmers.


I am aware of various "universal" chip programmers, including relatively inexpensive ones from China, and the expensive one offered on the above site, but as none of these mention the IP3604, I am cautious.


So my question is - is there a modern device which can flash these chips, and if not what do I need to look for on eBay? From some YouTube videos I've watched I guess in the latter case I might then have to go chasing other hardware which can interact with old chip programmers.


I checked the device support list for my Dataman S4, but it doesn't go all the way back to 4Kbit (512x8) devices. The S4 isn't quite a universal programmer, as it can only supply power and Vpp on certain pins of its socket, and so on, but it would be more likely to support relatively
