The audiovisual work »A Child’s Poem« by the Vienna-based artists BYDL and Modified Machinery materializes an afterlife of moments that have been, of which it is impossible to determine whether they took place or whether we mistake the montage of a dream as actual reality. Memory is actualized past in the present. What has been exists only in relation to the now. The alien past becomes our history, our beingness, which we remember in an unbounded way and charge with a structure of meaning. It is not about the ability to remember certain moments, but about the inability to forget these moments again. In the combination of glitch-visuals and noise, the real of pictorial signs blurs with the unreality of an auditory reality composed of symbolic forms of non-signs – dreaming waking and waking dreaming; the past of a deprived generation recurring in its actualized unrecognizability. And reconstructs itself in the present. (Christoph Benkeser) 

BYDL is a dedicated noise scrambler outta Vienna, Austria on the hunt for abandoned tape material to reuse in new musical contexts within experimental spheres of Ambient, Drone and Techno. Those excavated musical and non-musical artifacts reach from children recording their homework to business people dictating their plans to themselves, all connected through their attribute of not being meant for the world to hear – let alone being used in music – while opening an intimate window into a past yet (and sometimes still) unknown. So far BYDL released on various labels such as Sama Recordings, Vienna Underground Traxx, Tongraeber, Ternär and more…

Modified Machinery is focused on the rabbit hole of analog video circuitry and the hidden aesthetics in Glitches. With the use of Cathode Ray Tubes he makes it possible to see realtime modulation of analog signals – in colorful and psychedelic ways. Since 2021 the Vienna based artist and engineer has been upcycling video gear from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, revealing their inner beauty that threatens to be forgotten.

This is a raw and direct recording of this years live set by two thirds of Ausgesprochen:Neu at Stadtflucht Festival, Böllerbauer Haag. What was planned to be a trip into Ambient fields turned into a noisy catharsis in the heat of the moment. Consists improvisations around tape loops, feedback taming, found dictaphone and cassette tape material with some disturbing vocal parts as well as spring reverb slapping and Chrys shaving his beard on stage.

Ausgesprochen:Neu (2/3) – Live @ Stadtflucht Festival '22

At this years Stadtflucht Festival (Böllerbauer, Haag) I held a workshop on Environmental Listening, Field Recording and Tape Loops while being slightly hungover. The results were played in a six hours long, ever-changing installation of three tape loops of different lenghts and speeds at so-called Knusperhäuschen. The tape loops sometimes got stuck or sucked up in the players and constantly degraded while rubbing against the guiding shaft.

Thanks to all the participants for sticking with it and helping me through the difficulties of that day: Catherine, Verena, Andreas, Daphne, Paul, Johannes, Tobi.

Eine Soundcollage aus Aufnahmen der diesjährigen Heuernte des urbanen Agrarkollektivs der LaaerBergBauerInnen. Das Wetzen der Sensen wechselt sich mit den Erntegesängen, Umgebungsgeräuschen wie Fluglärm und dem sanften Tröpfeln der Gießkannen ab. 

A sound collage of recordings of this year's hay harvest of the urban agricultural collective LaaerBergBauerInnen. The sharpening of the scythes alternates with harvest chants, ambient sounds such as aircraft noise and the gentle trickling of watering cans.

Ein Projekt im Rahmen von Common Rooms // FLUCC 2023

Im Rahmen des Projekts Expanded Garden Leopoldstadt werden von 24. September bis 1. Oktober ausgehend vom FLUCC mehrere Mikrolabore zwischen agrar-ökologischen Initiativen, Lern- und Kulturorten an der künstlerischen Schnittstelle zum öffentlichen Raum stattfinden. Eine dreiteilige Erdprozession ermöglicht allen teilnehmenden Orten sich miteinander verbinden zu lassen. Nahrung und neue Bilder werden gesammelt, geteilt, gegessen, verarbeitet und lassen arbeiten. Fermentation, eine Workshop-Konferenz und eine performative Boden-Eröffnung, aber auch gemeinsame Mappings, eine mobile Lochkamera und eine Saatgutbörse werden von einer Solarkantine begleitet. Die Ausstellung reflektiert visuell und installativ über diverse methodische Zugänge dieser situativen Kunstpraxis von Expanded Garden. 

COMMON ROOMS ist der Titel der 2023 neu initiierten »Community-based Art«  Reihe des FLUCC, welche nach einem Open Call von einer Jury ausgewählte Künstler:innen und Kollektive durch partizipative Kunstprojekte mit polydiversen Communities, Nachbarschaften und Schulen rund um den Praterstern und darüber hinaus verbindet.

A project in the framework of Common Rooms // FLUCC 2023

As part of the Expanded Garden Leopoldstadt project, from September 24 to October 1, starting from FLUCC, several micro-labs will take place between agro-ecological initiatives, learning and cultural places at the artistic interface with public space. A three-part earth procession allows all participating sites to connect. Food and new images will be gathered, shared, eaten, processed and let work. Fermentation, a workshop-conference and a performative soil opening, as well as shared mappings, a mobile pinhole camera and a seed exchange are accompanied by a solar canteen. The exhibition reflects visually and installatively on diverse methodological approaches to this situational art practice of Expanded Garden. 

COMMON ROOMS is the title of FLUCC's newly initiated »Community-based Art« series, which connects artists and collectives selected by a jury after an open call with polydiverse communities, neighborhoods and schools around Praterstern and beyond through participatory art projects.

While we were on MØNTAGE CAMP at Urhof 20 in Grünbach am Schneeberg, Lower Austria, S. Nicolussi (@bydl) recorded the last five minutes of "silence" in the big hall before sleeping. The eight recordings in total then were layered on top of each other to form this composition by themselves.

Recently I attended a tape market hosted by Jeopardize Tapes (@jeopardizetapes) in a venue called Bootleg where I met @p_l_a_u. They run the label Erker and he brought a release that consisted of a j-card with some bootleg instructions; telling people to download a certain clock collection video and dub it to tape. The thing is, the video was just a bit over 20 minutes. As I had only C60 tapes at home and vividly hate empty tape space. Thus, I downloaded three clock collection videos, stretched and edited them a bit to fill one side of a C60 cassette. This is the result, enjoy.

For the audiovisual show Fair Use, developed and performed by Nicolussi in 2024, 
obsolete media and abandoned data carriers such as Mini DV, cassettes and Dictaphone tapes were highlighted. Fair Use features an experimental film projection edited and processed from found footage as well as a musical improvisation composed in real time. During the performance the artist is hidden behind a translucent projection surface, blurring the relationship between nostalgia and reality. Fair Use opens a wide range of possible interpretations and questions with borrowed originality, pirating in artistic creation and cautious handling/misuse of sensitive data as central themes. For the EP Fairly Used recordings of rehearsals and live performances were edited and rearranged into complete tracks. The base material was recorded while rehearsing in Vienna and while performing at FLUCC in Vienna and KAPU in Linz. 

Nicolussi performs in numerous projects, composes for theater and film and co-runs the cassette label Epileptic Media. Analog and digital systems of chance, processed field recordings and everyday noises form the basis for his heavily manipulated sound designs.
