In the world of Niels Orens (he/him), sound is emotion. Driven by technology, the gifted Belgian producer and visual artist is constantly searching for new ways to generate sound and explore the different textures of his cello.

On his debut EP “Make Null & Void” he steps forward with four diverse and meticulously produced tracks that present a collection of feelings from the past year. Bound by depth in sound design, his productions voyage to the outer fringes of modern classical, breaks and techno rather than sticking to an a priori defined genre.

“For me, music is a way of expressing myself - iterations that otherwise would not find a way out. I started to write these tracks just the way I felt at that moment- it feels natural to stay true to my feelings without getting stuck on a list of checkboxes that have to be crossed to fit in a genre. By going for this approach, I discovered techniques and signatures that I kept using in every track. For example the glitchy details, the more complex rhythmic elements and the use of my cello to create organic synth-like textures and pads.”

‘Too Tired To Sprint’ morphs from a simple piano composition to an intense electronic environment with high pitched glitches and dynamic sequences.

Niels Orens:

“I had a lot of things to do, but a complete lack of energy to finish them off.
It felt like a noisy dream where weird creatures were watching me, trying to blame me for not doing simple tasks that were expected from me at the time. I could run away from them, but a new creature was already behind the corner. In the end I was too tired to sprint.”

For the visual side of this track Niels used an A.I. algorithm from Xander Steenbrugge to create a dream-like experience. The input for this algorithm are weird creatures based on machine learning that are further processed by himself to match the vibe he was going for.
