Text by Niels Rønsholdt based on MfS (Stasi) archived listings of slogans used by the population of DDR during the demonstration throughout Eastern Germany in the autumn of 1889. 
These texts are mixed with other material, for example Luther’s Small Catechism and slogans (very similar to the above) from recent PEGIDA demonstrations in the same East German cities.
In the 6th movement the hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” (“Nu takker alle Gud", nr. 11) by Johann Crüger 1647 is quoted.
  
For the Danish premiere two hymns were sung by all: 
Before 1st movement (Time I): Nu takker alle Gud (Now thank we all our God)
Before 7th movement (Time II): Forgæves er vor Kraft og Kunst (In vain is all thy toil and pain). The first with original text, the latter with rewritten second stanza.

Book of Prayers is commissioned by and written to Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir and Athelas Sinfonietta for performance at Golden Days Festival 2019 with kind support from Danish Arts Foundation.
