Night Vision Podcast Episode 2

The third Night Vision release comes from SHAEDES, the musical brainchild of Edmonton producers Gavin Delainey and Michael Mannerow. Their debut EP draws influence from both west coast bass culture, and the UK’s ever-present garage scene. The title track is a dark, sensual, and provocative club jam, pushed along thoughtful terrain by deep basslines and haunting synths. “It’s only recently that this kind of music has gained traction in our city,” Delainey notes. “People are starting to move away from the in-your-face EDM sound and exploring the deeper side of dance music. It’s exciting to be a part of it all.” Keep it locked on Night Vision for more from these two amazing producers.

Our fifth release comes from Night Vision co-founder, NVS. A 10-year veteran DJ, NVS’s first release on the label shows his passion for hook-filled melodies and summer house jams. On “Breathe” he’s joined by Aly Tadros, a New York based singer/songwriter and touring artist. Her sultry and pristine vocals carry the EP’s signature tune to new heights while the bass pushes the song forward. You’ll catch yourself humming the chorus for days after.

Keith Walton and Kurtis Schultz, the Canadian duo, come together to form Better Living DJs. These veteran DJs have been mastering their style with multiple residencies throughout Canada and a non-stop show schedule. Together they create deep grooving dance music, spanning genres from Nu Disco to Deep House. Formed in late 2012, the Edmonton based project has done nothing but gain momentum with multiple releases on Filter Music Records (Vancouver). In 2015 expect multiple original releases featuring vocalist Julie Adams of Unwed Mothers. Their hard hitting original tracks come with a touch of soul and insight.

Night Vision Podcast Episode 26: Howl Sound

Welcome to Episode 28 of the Night Vision Podcast! This month’s guest mix comes all the way from Vancouver from long-time NV favourite, Max Ulis (@MaxUlis)! Max Ulis is a pioneer on the West Coast, pushing his own unique brand of house and techno. He is half of Sabota, and a charter member of Lighta! Sound, which has been instrumental in the building of Vancouver’s underground movement for the better part of a decade. He has performed at prestigious festivals such as Decibel, Mutek, and New Forms, his music has been played by notable performers such as Tim Green, Skream, B Traits, Shadow Child, Grenier, &ME, and Breakage and he’s shared the stage with a who’s who of contemporary dance music.

Nick Garcia - Delamar: Nick Garcia’s Delamar is a jazzy house tune with a tinge of lo-fi. Night Vision Podcast Episode 39: Bikes

It’s been a little while but we’re back with the *~*~40th*~*~ episode of the Night Vision Podcast. We’ve got another Alberta expat on the guest mix this time around with the honours going to Calgary’s Lorne B (@lorneb). Now living in the Kootenays, Lorne is a music curator for Bass Coast Festival (@bass-c0ast) and a stellar disc-jockeyer. Edmonton-based Canadian label and collective Night Vision are back again, with the newest addition their catalog coming from local artist Honeydripper, who’s recently popped up on our radar through tracks such as the Houseum-approved hit “All About You”. If you’re not acquainted with Honeydripper’s sample-heavy brand of house groovers yet, you’re a little late to the party, but there’s no better time than now. On this latest EP, Honeydripper’s musical roots and knack for sample curation are as evident as ever; coupling the grooviest lines, licks & riffs, Honeydripper puts together some seriously catchy tunes.

Our premiere today is the title track, ‘Sunday Street’. Featuring swung drums and sweet jazzy piano stabs, Sunday Street is sure to get you in the mood to dance. An infectious baseline for good measure and some filtered things here and there, and you’ve got yourself quite the infectious groove. It’s no surprise that it’s been serving as a secret weapon for the Night Vision crew for quite some time, and we’re just happy we can join the club! For the last year, Honeydripper has been steadily making his presence known as a formidable producer and multi-instrumentalist with releases on Delve Deeper and Sooo Wet and a handful of festival appearances.  His track “All About You” became a sleeper hit last year, racking up nearly a million plays on the Houseum YouTube channel.  The Edmonton native’s unique sound is enhanced by his adept guitar and bass playing, which blend as seamlessly into his music as his carefully-curated samples, and it comes to a head on his debut EP for Night Vision: the Sunday Street EP.

The two originals here stand out from today's tidal wave of sample-heavy house; they feel and sound like tracks that were written by an ensemble of quality musicians rather than a singular producer.  Sunday Street’s funky bass riff and jazzy piano are infectious together, creating a fat groove that has had crowds getting down all summer long.  The tune is truly special and has achieved 'secret weapon' status by practically everyone in the Night Vision crew.  Like This takes a deeper route with its rolling sub bass, muted trumpets, and sultry spoken-word vocal before dropping into a heavy slapped-bass riff that smacks of P-funk influence.  Together, the two originals are absolute testaments to Honeydripper’s prowess as both a producer and a player.  

On remix duties are Australian house phenom Subjoi and label mainstay Nick Garcia.  Subjoi needs no intro at this point, having secured his place as one of the most prolific producers on the scene.  His remix of “Like This” is definitely made for club play with its devastating bottom end and relentless groove.  Nick Garcia came through with his signature style of electro-tinged deep house; his remix of “Like This” relies on atmospheric stabs, charging 303 riffs, and a clever reworking of the vocal to craft an excellent late-night mix of the track.  With so many sounds and flavors on this package there really is something for everyone.
