ABOUT
I was raised in an agnostic household, but living in America offers very little chance of escaping the pervasive grip of religion. It so fully permeates our culture, ethics, and laws that it can often be difficult to recognize where religious doctrine ends and secular principles begin. And while organized religion plays no direct role in my life, I can acknowledge that I’ve always been somewhat envious of the comfort and sense of community it can bring people. It unites and offers solace; but it also divides and otherizes. This song attempts to reckon with my ingrained cynicism and a conflicting desire for spiritual fulfillment, all against the backdrop of cold synths, warm pianos and guitars, and a pleading question: Will I learn to be alright?

ABOUT
The term “Anthropocene” refers to our current, human-dominated era, in which centuries of human exploitation and wrangling of the natural world have left indelible, irreversible legacies. This song takes place from some greater omniscient perspective, offering detached observations about the tragedy inherent in human progress. Its narrator likely has tears in their eyes — both from sadness and anger. Insect drones that once soundtracked entire ecosystems have gone silent; oceans roil and collapse centuries-old cities; our endless schemes are finally ending. Meanwhile, the song romps along at a pace conducive to festival-like grooving, but skulks like a monster stalking its prey.

ABOUT
I’m sure I’m not the first to describe our global slide into chaos and disarray as a “slow decline,” but I still find an apt descriptor. The changes are noticeable and measurable, but they are also easy to ignore. Mired in our day-to-day, weighed down by personal turmoil, it's hard to listen to cries for help when they don't harmonize with our own songs of distress. It's hard to listen when you're too busy speaking. This song eulogizes the destruction of our livable Earth and laments the tragically ironic economic opportunity it presents to the present-day robber barons and overlords who hold so many fates in their hands. It's a fun song about the end of the world, if such a thing exists.

ABOUT
What started as a late-night panic attack during the depths of the pandemic ended up a song that seemed destined for a new project. It was a clear sonic departure from my earlier bands, which skewed towards heavier, post punk-indebted sounds. But while the music was lighter, the subject material remained dark. The music and rhythms are breezy; the lyrics are suffocating. I love the juxtaposition of mellow instrumentation supporting a song about a panic attack — a tablespoon of honey to go with the vinegar. My friend and Nightblooms bandmate Chessa Rich’s vocals provide an ethereal reminder to stay calm during these dark moments, while also providing a dose of her own pop genius in the song's final psychedelic moments. And producer Saman Khoujinian takes us into cosmic country territory with indelible slide guitar work that creates another sonic earworm.

Written many years ago — long before Nightblooms — I always struggled with how to place this song. My output at the time was loud, and angular. This song was quiet and direct. It spoke directly about love and its mystifying powers in the face of self doubt and insecurity; it paid homage to my undying love of the Velvet Underground and their softer side. Now, in the context of Nightblooms, the song feels at home. Perhaps it’s the confidence that comes with age, but I don’t feel as exposed by this song as I once did. And it doesn’t hurt that it now features a chamber orchestra’s worth of dreaminess in the song’s final moments thanks to my fellow Sleepy Cat labelmate Libby Rodenbough. I like that it feels stately and baroque, but it’s not a surge in volume or overdrive that gives it that power. It’s feeling and emotion laid bare, with nothing to disguise it. Occam’s razor for the emotional songwriter.
