Joining me this month for episode 49 is Canadian producer and live performer Mathew Jonson. Initially from the west coast of Canada and now based in Berlin, Mathew’s upbringing in electronic music started in the nineties with the jazz-meets-techno live band Cobblestone Jazz. Collaboration and improvisation continue to play key parts in Mathew’s music career, extending to inform his creative process, his solo work, and his techniques as a live performer.

With this in mind, he created the Freedom Engine Academy, a music school offering intensive courses around electronic music production, music theory, and creativity taught by a roster of talented musicians and Mathew himself. In this episode, we’re discussing collaborative learning, and how the group experience can make music better.

This one has been quite some time in the making. https://soundcloud.com/lunaludmila has been a friend of the label for years now, contributing tracks to compilations, playing at SoHaSo takeovers, hanging out, and basically representing Something Happening Somewhere in the best possible way. Her dubbed-out style and meticulous mixing shines through on this hour-long mix. It’s a thick weave of grooves, pads, and basslines that seems to move ever forward. To make these classic elements feel both fresh and familiar is quite an achievement. Thanks Ashley for taking us on this journey.

Skudge is a live act I’ve been following for some time, so I’m really delighted that they’ve contributed a mix to our live series, a recording from a recent set at Scopes in Stockholm. Founded as a duo, the act now works solely as one individual, Elias. 

Right from its inception, Skudge’s primary focus has been releasing uncompromising electronic music. 

A consistent series of vinyl releases have appeared on Skudge Records, accompanied by remix EPs. Featuring a distinctive musical style, it resulted in EPs on Dekmantel and Indigo Area, as well as remixes for a diverse range of talented artists including Donato Dozzy, Anthony Shake" Shakir, Instra:mental, Ben Sims, and others.


Skudge’s meticulous attention to loops, intricate details, and refined taste has captivated audiences for nearly a decade. Whether it's through their EPs or albums, their hardware-driven live performances that have graced countless clubs and events worldwide, or their association with esteemed labels and podcasts, one thing remains certain: the artistic prowess and enduring presence of Skudge and the label is here to stay.

Mantic is a Romanian DJ trio composed of Oxy, Andrei Fig, and Cristea. Their journey began with a strong friendship and a shared love for music, particularly evident during their electrifying back-to-back performances that have lit up countless house gatherings. It was amidst this high-energy atmosphere that the concept of the trio was born. With the seamless addition of Cristea, the trio evolved into a tight-knit unit, embarking on a serious and unified musical endeavour. What sets Mantic apart is their ability to blend their individual musical backgrounds and influences into a signature sound that transcends genre boundaries. Their chemistry as artists allows them to continuously push creative boundaries and explore new musical horizons. We even hosted a recent mix of theirs from a session from Brasov in Romania. Izaakson is a well-known figure in underground circles. A native of Holland, he’s best-known as the man behind the Memoria label, an imprint that’s been releasing quality-laden house and techno for some time now. Indeed, Izaakson’s own career is one of longevity, and he’s been involved in electronic music for an impressive twenty years now. 

As you might imagine from a career spanning this long, Izaakson wears many hats, from co-running the aforementioned Memoria to pursuing his solo career and collaborating as one half of IZIL. In this interview, he gave us an insight into his time management techniques, the challenges faced in the music industry, and his commitment to quality in the face of a changing landscape. 

As he reflects on the evolution of electronic music and his contribution to it, Izaakson also shared a live recording from CLUB 100 in Belgium, offering a taste of his distinctive style. Listen to the mix here, and head to the website to read the full interview.

Closing set at Organik Festival 2019 in Hualien, Taiwan. Last 1,5 hours was a b2b with Diskonnected. 

Picture this: A slow steep drive down through a narrow jungle path, 
the sound of distant ocean waves, frogs, and insects is all you hear until suddenly the jungle opens up and you've arrived at Organik Festival.

Located on a secluded beach on the Taiwan east coast facing the seemingly infinite Pacific with awesome mountain rocks and jungle kneeling to it. A beast of a brand new model Funktion One sound system tuned to perfection and a rare gathering of the most loving and kind people you can imagine. 

This is the spirit of Organik. Nature, quality, peace, and a big coherent mix of dreamy techno, ambient, experimental, house, and disco. Personally have I never experienced a better festival. Was such a pleasure and honour to close the festival on a late Sunday night playing after Dorisburg. I got around different styles and wanted to play a non linear set and instead take people on a journey. I hope you feel some of the festival vibe in the recording.

The last hour and a half my friend and Smoke Machine Taiwan resident joined me in a b2b showing a rare housy side of his palette.
