Peerless rhythmist and sonic explorer Afrikan Sciences makes his PAN debut with 'Circuitous,' the third full-length, freeform offering from the New York-based artist.

At the nexus of Afrofuturism, science fiction, transcendental free jazz, and future hip hop, this new work from Eric Porter Douglas casts itself and its creator in a liminal zone most recognizably charted by astral traveler Sun Ra. ‘Circuitous’ follows from nearly a decade of releases for Deepblak —the Oakland-rooted imprint of frequent collaborator Aybee— and shares common blood with both the elevated consciousness of late '80s club culture and contemporary West Coast beat scene

Built around Douglas’ signature polyrhythms and complex melodies, the unorthodox agility demonstrated throughout the album’s fourteen tracks reflect his long history of live, improvised sets combining multiple turntables, upright bass, and a command center of digital tablets and controllers. Each track maps the artist’s own movements, tracing paths of flight, highway trajectories through tunnels and over bridges, and rides through rough and gated neighborhoods. If familiar on the surface, deeper or repeated listenings to ‘Circuitous’ reveal the dynamic multiplicity embodied within.

'Circuitous' is a free and unbound body of work—one that defies easy classification yet translates fluidly across multiple environments—compiled over double LP in order to fully realize the scope of Afrikan Science's sonic palette.

Manifattura Tabacchi is a former cigar and cigarette production site that is having a renaissance thanks to an innovative urban regeneration project. Back in June, the Bosconi Records crew rocked up there for a live hardware jam session featuring an array of musicians from the label including Fabio Della Torre on the mixer and Dukwa, Ennio Colaci, Herva,
Mass Prod, Rufus, The Clover on the instruments with the special participation of A Guy Called Gerald. Now comes the record with the exceptional results all pressed to wax.

The selected tracks follow the order of execution which has naturally developed in a crescendo from 130 to 180 BPM, and
then closes by slowing down with a take at 110BPM.

Opening up the EP is ‘130 - Tuning’, which is cosmic house music with freeform jazz synth lines that take you into the next dimension. ‘138 - Gang Up' is harder hitting, with punchy drums and lithe sci-fi synth lines darting in all directions.

‘138 - Swinging’ explores a broken beat style with spinning hi hats and intergalactic funk of the highest order. ‘150 - Snappy’
then picks up pace with corrugated drum lines and twanging guitars freaking you out, and ‘180 - Blowing’ is a hyper-driven experiment with old school dusty jungle beats and gloopy synths while ‘110 - Offhand’ is a deeper, more thoughtful track with whispered vocals and a dreamy vibe.

This is adventurous electronic music that goes well off grid, plays with strange temps, weird textures and occult moods and is
utterly original as a result.

The Inspiration of: Dead Bandit [Quindi Mix Series]

Quindi Records continues to yield intriguing prospects as we reach the third edition, moving from Woo’s astral ruminations via Cabaret Du Ciel’s sonorous meditations on to the dusty, dusky mantras of Dead Bandit. Maintaining the ambiguous creative practices of the label’s previous releases, ​From The Basement r​eaches to the earth for the malleable grit of post-rock while making the most of the broader sonic outlooks afforded by kosmische and electronic effects processes.
Dead Bandit are Chicagoan songwriter Ellis Swan and Canadian multi-instrumentalist James Schimpl. Swan has previously released solo works including the stunning, inward-looking album ​I’ll Be Around​, a lo-fi Southern gothic dragging the husk of country ballads through battered signal chains. In Dead Bandit, Swan and Schimpl’s artistic vision casts its gaze outwards on a vast expanse, where the distortion has space to stretch its legs and the drums pound out into open space. There’s a common tonality at work here, the duos guitars telling a thousand hard-bitten tales where Swan’s voice falls silent. It’s no surprise to learn Swan and Schimpl’s reference points include Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack, SF noise rockers Chrome and the imperial work of the late, great Mark Sandman of Morphine.
You can sense Jim Jarmusch’s America just lingering behind the road-weary thrum of ‘These Clouds’ and detect the shadow of Tom Waits lurking in the raunchy lurch of ‘FF M’. The pointedly titled ‘Sedated’ calls to mind the slowcore movement and its rejection of rock n’ roll’s fixation on speed. Instead, tonality and atmosphere are key across ​From The Basement​, although the ambient lull of ‘I See Her There’ is the exception rather than the rule. Dead Bandit’s desert sound has vibrancy and immediacy to match its moodiness, from the sultry swagger of opening track ‘Mud’ to the bold and borderline bombastic ‘When I Looked Around’.
Like the previous Quindi releases, this record is inherently experimental in nature, but not at the expense of its warmth and instant appeal. From the basement, an inquisitive pair with primitive tools look out and imagine a colossal plain as the canvas on which to paint their picture.
