As & Em is the first single from my upcoming album - Thousand Year Waves - released on the 3rd of December.

On Thousand Year Waves the world is falling to pieces. But not with a crash. The world is decaying in waves. Be it climate change, a global pandemic, or financial turmoil - they all come in waves.

You watch the ocean from the beach. After a while, you start thinking you understand the pattern of the waves and that you can tell which one is bigger than the other. Until a huge wave comes along and you don’t understand anything at all.

In the morning of New Years' Eve 1995 an oil rig outside Norway detected and measured the first rogue wave ever. The platform was built to withstand a wave height of 20 meters - something that was calculated to happen statistically 1 time in 10,000 years. The monster wave that covered the platform that morning was 25.6 meters high. The waves just before and after were around 12 meters high. But one wave was higher than what was statistically possible.

This is how the world will end.

This is the b-side to As & Em. The actual music exists in one copy only - on a vinyl record. It's buried in the ground (as you can hear) at the coordinates above - in a waterproof container. This unique record can be listened to even after the end of the world. If a future generation finds a vinyl record they will be able to construct a machine - without prior knowledge - to listen to the music - just as potential aliens would be able to listen to the golden record sent out with Voyager spacecraft.

My album Thousand Year Waves is about rogue waves. Sailors have always talked about monster waves and there are many stories about sudden waves taking ships with them. But it wasn’t until 1995 that the first rogue wave was recorded and measured at an oil rig outside Norway. But one wave was higher than what was statistically possible. I think the end of the world will come in waves: pandemic waves, waves of climate change, waves of war. They will be bigger and bigger. And then out of nowhere, there will be a monster wave so huge we couldn’t even imagine it. It's the end. After that, no more waves.

They came early in the morning. All clothed in white and silent, slowly walking barefoot through the corridors of the ship. They didn't talk to anyone. They just gathered at the same place every morning and started walking. There were young boys and girls, old men that barely couldn't move, I even saw an old woman in a wheel chair. But they had one thing in common: their faces were so peaceful.

Every morning a few people joined. After a while the whole ship talked about them.

One morning they started singing softly. The melody was slow and sad, but after hearing it a few times it felt uplifting. First I couldn't make out the words, but after a few minutes one voice grew stronger. It was a young boy. His clear voice cut through the rest of the choir like a bell.

"Falling Together as One", he sang. And the others joined him in unison.

The same words, the same sad melody. Over and over and over again.

My new album Staring Light is out now. The first single was released on the day of the spring equinox and the album on the night of the summer solstice. The music is following the light - mirroring the recording of the album in the spring of 2022 - and completing the ritual.
