It comes off red dirt roads and rusted mailboxes,
through screen doors that never shut right,

Daddy said nothing —
just stared at the tree line like it owed him money.

That wind learned the shape of my house
before I did.
It knew which floorboard creaked,
which prayer got skipped,
which promises were made drunk and meant sober.

Every time it howls at night,
it don’t sound mad —
it sounds disappointed.

High school lights flicker when it rolls in.
Old trucks won’t start.
Hearts do.

You can leave town,
cut your hair,
change your name,
but the Southern wind keeps your original copy.
