Been coming back to this for almost 14 years now. now.

Southern rock from Tallahassee, Florida.  Taylor Ross, age 23, played all the instruments on this album, breaking bones in a freak accident while flailing arms and head during a drum session. He finished, recording with his neck turned at a 90-degree for weeks on end. Pain killers may have been consumed. Surface To Air Missive became a band of four members.  They met Matthewdavid from Leaving records, who brought the album to Stones Throw. Leaving & Stones Throw have pressed 300 copies of the vinyl, all of which were commandeered by the band. Our seventh release and definitely one of the early ones that got us some notice outside of DC. Lilys were a local band that played with a lot of SLR bands and eventually included some members of Velocity Girl and Lorelei, so working with them seemed like a natural fit. I remember pretty vividly the first time I heard the master tape - it perfectly captured how explosive the band was live and how sharp the song-writing was. A stone cold classic.

Drip From Above

Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr and Cave’s Cooper Crain erected U.S.A. Studios in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood over a few weeks in January 2013 for the two months of recording sessions that make up Overdue.

Fohr’s 5th LP under the name Circuit des Yeux (her fourth to see release), weaves a sonic bildungsroman, documenting the transition from collegiate cloister in pastoral Bloomington, Indiana to the noisy, haggard Chicago South Side.  Even with the hand-constructed baffles and grandmother-sourced quilts thickly covering the walls (and, intermittently, a light crust of sloppy snow), the sounds of Little Village are literally embedded in the recording. The strains of nearby norteños pierce the floorboards and the elevated trains murmur just a few dozen feet from U.S.A. Studios’ flawed sanctuary. The songs rise above the din, however… full orchestrations (“Lithonia”) and damaged hallucinations (“Acarina”) alike. Fans of Fohr’s prior, more experimental work are not catered to with this immeasurably more sophisticated new effort… but nor will they, or any other listener, be disappointed.
