One doesn't expect to speak about clocks when it comes to club music. "Master Of Complication” the new Ep by Canblaster, is a concept record about time, speed and, well, the complexity of watches. Of course there are many things about the music of Canblaster that is not what you expect. First of all, his music is ultra-melodic with an almost Zen like use of melodies that lifts you right off the ground. Then there’s the everything-including-the-kitchen-sink beats filled with details that always seem to point outward to an even larger world.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let us introduce you to Canblaster, aka Cédric Steffens, he’s from Northern France and he’s part of the Club Cheval crew that’s currently storming the scene.  He’s only 22 but his unique ability to combine genres and sounds belie wisdom beyond his years.  “Master Of Complication” is his first for Nightshifters and, to be honest, it’s so full of new noises we’re not really sure how to describe it.

“Clockworks”, the slowest track (132bpm), kicks it all off with a soaring melody of reverberant House stabs and ticking watch beats. One notch faster is “Triple Ring” (140bpm) with probably the catchiest vocal hook of the year! It’s a UK-influenced club smash like no other! Sure, people could call “Lost In The Shell” (160bpm) a juke/footwork styled tune, but they’d be overlooking all the other music smashing - it’s the hardest song of the lot and guaranteed to start fights!  The release ends with “Timemaster's Chronicles” (180bpm), a thrillingly progressive tune that remains true to the Ep’s R&amp;B tinged spirit while hinting at every other musical genre in existence. Really!

In addition to 4 completely amazing original tracks, we have 4 completely amazing remixes. French superstars Para One &amp; Teki Latex team up for one of their best remixes ever on “Clockworks”, a time-crushing fusion of synths past and present with added Robotic vocals.  We’re proud to debut one of our new artists as well – Magnum takes “Triple Ring” and cuts it with superbly with breaks and a ton of atmosphere. Jubilee takes the same track to Miami, adds a touch of acid, and lets that bass boom! Bambounou takes “Timemaster's Chronicles” and completely reconfigures it as a steamy northern UK bass masterpiece from the future!­

Canblaster is also the first of a next generation of producers we’re proud to be working with. Together with Magnum (he’s next), Distal and Talk, they are a new generation of producers that are pushing the limits in a big way.

Rian Treanor returns to Planet Mu for his second album "File Under UK Metaplasm".

In 2018, Treanor left his home of Rotherham, a working class town in the North of England not far from rave nexus Sheffield, and headed to Uganda. He'd been invited to perform at Nyege Nyege festival, a mythical event that takes place on the shores of Lake Victoria in Jinja once a year. After nearly a week of almost non-stop syncopated bass, Treanor drove to the country's capital city Kampala to produce music for a month at the Nyege Nyege's Boutique Studio - an incubator that serves as a central hub for the record label and its many harmonic ventures.

A week later, while he was performing at Hollywood, the tiny dive bar that housed the Nyege Nyege crew's first events, Treanor began to think differently about the sound he'd been developing since 2015's acclaimed "A Rational Tangle". "Everyone was still beaming after the festival, full of energy and wanting it raw and fast," he explains. Treanor had been collaborating with Acholi fiddle player Ocen James, and absorbing sounds from the other producers at the studio like Tanzania's Jay Mitta and Sisso and Glasgow experimental duo The Modern Institute. The result was a jerky blend of hybridized footwork and singeli (Tanzania's own lightning-fast dance sound) that clocked in at a rapid 200bpm. "I played a Jlin track at the wrong speed and it was about 225bpm," he admits. "But it sounded really good so I went with it. People were going mental, it was so much fun."

Arriving home, inspired by the singeli production process, he focused on energy, building tracks and exploring urgency as the guiding method. Over the course of the year Treanor refined these ideas, building from raw components and eventually focusing on engineering the physicality of the sound. And at the end of 2019 he had the opportunity to tour Japan, where he was able to work out the finishing touches performing on some of the world's best soundsystems.

This polarity - the enigmatic, sweaty energy of singeli juxtaposed with slick, high-def bass weight - sits at the centre of "File Under UK Metaplasm", Treanor's second full-length. Opening track 'Hypnic Jerks' is maybe the perfect example of this, with crinkled percussive loops cut through by machine-gun kicks and acidic wobbles. Elsewhere, 'Vacuum Angle' takes Sheffield's Warp-ed legacy and brings it crashing into the future, with rhythms collapsing into static and noise but never deconstructing or losing the flow. 'Debouncing' meanwhile folds gliding square synths into rattling dancehall kicks, joining the dots between SND, Equiknoxx, Wiley and MCZO & Duke with a neon Sharpie.

"It's using all those formulaic dance structures but just slightly mangled or messed up," he says. "I'm still focused on making functioning dance music for clubs, but I'm really interested in how far you push that before it's just like - no."

Nightshifters is built around a core group of musicians making prime-time oriented banging club tracks to get people raving! Our sound is hybridized; you can find elements of B’more, Rave, Baile funk, Electro, Dubstep, House, Bassline, Drum and Bass, and shit, maybe even Trance in the mix. We’re an open-minded lot who are working hard to make your parties better.

We release about 8 Ep’s a year. They usually have 2-4 original tracks and 2-6 remixes. Occasionally we get some hot track in that we just want to spread around so we give them out for free. To date we’ve done 3 of those. Take a look in the releases section to find out all about them.
