Night Tide’s sophomore release welcomes two new names to the family. THOMMYY RA and Simonn bring us the “Lost Journey” EP, a 6 tracker of analogue laden esoteric house.

On the A, we have THOMMYY RA, label boss at Nasty Habits Tape Cltr and prone to a bi-annual name change, he contributed the silty SETH NK remix of Eluize’s “Up All Night” on our label’s debut record earlier this year. He opens with “Journey Into Nowhere”, an eerie, coasting, synth drenched opus propelled by throbbing percussion and rippling leads, follows with “Die Darling Die” a 90s touched, left of centre house cut, complete with a skipping kick and playfully nostalgic horn, and wraps the side with creepy, deep and groove heavy “Razzy Moon”.

On the B, we introduce Simonn for his first excursion on wax. "Unknown Habits" is a straight up, tried-and-tested party piece, its vibrant chords pulse amongst thumping drums issuing an undeniable call to the floor. He then turns his hand to something more aquatic, amphibious pads swell in “Lost In Progress” while layering percussion build before erupting into a euphoric break beat. Finally, “Raw and Unbleached” is a delicate arpeggio outing, melodic ideas tumble and burst over one another, it’s light and dreamy yet gritty, innocence in sound.

Night Tide founder Eluize returns to the label with her follow up to last year’s debut release “Talk In Technicolour”. Her latest five track sonic trip “For the Forgetful” follows 24 hours searching to be lost, finding comfort in the dance floor, time spent after hours and the day that follows. It seeks out soaring highs and sweeping lows covering all energies.

“Slate” opens. A deep offering, subtle and enthralling. Bright eyed keys, smooth strings, a snare that snaps and a swelling sub alludes to what’s to come. The tale continues with “For the Forgetful”, a hypnotic, punchy, deep house workout, alluring and sensual it beckons with whispered promises, abyssal toms, twisted pads and intricate percussion.

We go harder on the flip, ruthless, pushing, pulsing “The Blackout” shakes away any last doubt and drives the sojourn into the night along with memories you’ll try to retrieve tomorrow. Eluize’s take on techno, the bass pumps beneath a grinding acid line, interspersed with echoed bleeps and a cutting lead. The build continues. “Second Valley” is ecstatic. Deep house meets trance-esque undertones, for peak time moments or as the day breaks. Its cinematic soundscape speaks to Eluize’s penchant for the theatric as classical instruments twist through synthetic sounds.

We close with “Rest (Refrain)” which brings back themes from the session had in an ambient context, mustering the mood of recovery, waking, confused in the gentle afternoon light, when memories and motifs from the night before linger on the mind in gentler forms.

A year after Eluize’s debut release on Night Tide, we’ve invited friends of the label Ena Cosovic, Panorama Channel and Gratts & Nibc to reimagine a selection of her tracks.

First up Ena Cosovic, co-founder of Copenhagen based True Rotary Recordings, Culture Box resident and dub techno specialist, has injected “Make Me Sin” with irresistible drive and punch. Dynamic stabs and compelling percussion support the aquatic swells, churning melodies and details from the original.

Russia’s Panorama Channel (Biologic Records) turn their hand to the track next, creating an electric, Italo touched builder, heightening the intensity with gritty synths, a biting snare and growling bass as the delicately eery piano riffs re-enter the fray.

Darker still, the Belgian and the Swede bring us their addictive “Catnip” version of “For the Forgetful”. Inspired by long mornings on the Berlin dance floor, the pair have created a groovy, hypnotic workout that revolves around a subby bass line and raw cuts of Eluize’s vocals to prop up the sleepless and induce movement during those daylight creeping, end-of-night denying moments.

Eluize adds her piece to the pack, unveiling a secret track made especially for the cassette release. “Never Think Before You Begin” is an ambient affair, slowed down and intimate, built from twisted vocal elements and layered piano punctuated with grainy percussive hits. The label founder also reworked “Make Me Sin” into a dub of sorts, stripping out the vocals to make space for the beautifully performed keys, uplifting arps and rippling leads to take centre stage.

Bermuda Series’ debut release “Unspoken” comes from Leipzig’s INAR - Collective member Natalie Luengo, an intricately woven world of sounds that reference her roots in house and techno while residing somewhere atmospheric and otherworldly.

Interplanetary pads, a subby breakbeat kick and brushes of growling bass sculpt the landscape on “Unknown I”. “Unspoken” brings us glitchy percussion and meandering melodies while lush sustains and velvety reverb tails flow below. “Fading” hosts off kilter percussion, rising arpeggios, esoteric leads and a rumbling bass that meet somewhere melancholic yet uplifting.

Rounding out the selection, fellow Leipzig based artist and Distillery resident Lydia Eisenblätter joins the fold reworking “Fading”. Harnessing the original’s moody essence she’s added a thumping kick and crisp hats translating the cut into a direct to the floor, stomping house jam.

Dublin’s R.Kitt, fresh off the back of an incredible live throw down at AVA festival in Belfast sent us through some divine music we absolutely had to have. “Ripples from the Edge” shares five sentimental yet forward thinking originals from the rising producer as well as a remix from label founder Eluize.

The title track comes at us with cascading arps, ariose droplets and pure, smokey pads that burst through a jungle of thumping percussion. “I Wish You Hadn’t Said” gets going with gritty breaks and glassy synths that would be at home on a fog laden warehouse floor, mood lightening melodic jabs slice through before things turn back to a tumultuous minor. “Strange Perspective” is casual and light hearted, funk charged electro.

On the flip “Stitch Up” feels ancestral, heavy bass, earthy leads and a dark and enigmatic vocal hit heavy. Damhsa, the Irish word for dance, inspires the next jam, “Machine Damhsa”, a fast paced 4/4 beckoning to do so. The track’s breath catching breakdown gives a moment of transcendence between it’s boundless energy and pulsating drive.

Eluize couldn’t resist the lush melodies from Ripples and dives in to turn out a cosmic, 80s touched b boy ready version.

Leaning into his fascination with universal theories, including a fear of the hadron collider’s potential, Bobo’s latest “Whatever I Do” takes samples and inspiration from these concepts. Tones created with a trusty Elektron Monomachine and Behringer Crave, traverse some heavy effect processing and are supported by classic analogue drums, tasteful jungle taunts and modern LFO modulations. The four tracks build steadily, cavernous and gleaming, propelling and mesmeric, for the listener, the dancer and the cosmic excursionist.
Photography by Izzy Wylie, who’s practice focuses on analog film, documentation and capturing places that may not be around forever. Izzy is currently doing an ongoing photographic print fundraiser, to help support NGO - Afrika Awake.
