I let you stay because 
                                   I couldn’t think
of any reason good enough 
to make you go,         besides

I didn’t have the state of mind
                              to make evictions,
which you took advantage of
                         but I don’t blame you.

Starting with a hammock
in the corner        of a window-frame
you spun complexity across,
                      for me to gaze through.

Tessellations of an outside I’d
forgotten, preferably,
and shut the curtains on at night
                         while you kept watch.

Between the flies and fever dreams
I’d say you did alright by me,
                               their tiny corpses
piling up like knots

                      a catcher burdens with,
my mother told me,
      hanging one inside the cupboard
where my fear was nested.

                         But it’s different now;
I don’t so much as tremble
                                      at a shadow
as I wonder when I won’t

                                 be needing you.
